A Reflection on the NIWA Science Fair
By: Harriet, Delia, Isaac, Will and Anaïs

On the 31st of August, 20 year 7/8 students went to Victoria University for the NIWA science fair. There were lots of other schools there including high school students too. We all had to make a unique, innovative, interesting science fair project to impress the judges and teachers. It also had to be a topic and area of science we were interested in. There was a huge criteria we had to adhere to. We had to follow the scientific method carefully and methodically to be granted entry into the NIWA science fair. There were a range of judges who came around to examine our stands and the bountiful projects. They asked us many questions. Some of the judges were assessing our bibliography, our research and writing or our graphs. Some judges were from specific areas or organisations, such as the aeronautical society, the Maori and Polonysian society, Vic Uni, or NIWA scientists assessing the chemistry, biology or physics we researched and used within our projects. Once we had been assessed we received a red dot next to our project to indicate our project had been assessed. There were lots of amazing projects to see. There were many students with well made, well researched projects. Overall, Seatoun school won 17 prizes, which was a very impressive result. It was a great experience. There was also an award ceremony where we could officially receive our prizes, certificates and for some students substantial cash prizes.
