Cultural and Sporting Exchange with College House

Tyra Leitupo —

A Timeless Tradition – 95 Years of Selwyn and College House Exchanges

This year marked the 95th annual Cultural Exchange between Selwyn College and College House (University of Canterbury) — a tradition steeped in history, friendly rivalry, and enduring camaraderie. Selwyn journeyed to Christchurch to compete for the Principal’s Cup in the cultural exchange. This included various events, from intellectual contests to musical showcases.

The cultural competition between Selwyn College and College House featured seven events: debating, chess, theatre sports, big choir, small choir, instrumental, and the much-anticipated Battle of the Bands. Selwyn College secured victories in debating, instrumental, and small choir. At the same time, College House triumphed in chess, theatre sports, and big choir. With both colleges achieving three wins each, the competition reached a tiebreaker.

The final showdown was the Battle of the Bands. It was a high-energy event that had both colleges on their feet. Despite a powerful performance, Selwyn narrowly missed out on clinching the Principal's Cup, which will remain with College House for another year.

The rivalry is far from over. Selwyn will host College House in Dunedin for the Sporting Exchange in the second semester. With anticipation building, Selwynites are eager to commence training and determined to ensure the Warden's Cup remains at Selwyn for another year.

This exchange continues to be a cornerstone of Selwyn's identity, blending spirited competition with deep-rooted tradition. Here's to 90 years of connection and many more to come.
