Selwyn United's Match of the Day
Coen Lammers - April 28, 2019
Selwyn United’s 15th grade Black team snatched a stunning 5-5 draw against Christ College after fighting back from a 4-1 deficit.
After two strong performances in the opening two matches of the season, the school holidays seemed to have hindered the momentum for coach Mike’s team as they were stunned by Christ College who took a quick 3-0 lead during the first half.
A late goal before half time gave the boys a glimmer of hope, but when the defence were too slow to react, the boys ended up conceding a fourth goal. The game looked to be over.
However, that fourth goal seemed to spur the boys on, and once they got a quick second goal, they found another gear. The fast paced wingers ran rampant through the tiring Christ College defence. Two more quick goals levelled the scoreline and the boys looked likely to score a winner.
This crazy match, however, took another turn as a lapse in concentration from the boys, followed by great footwork by the Christ College striker, lead to another goal. The score line now read 5-4 to Christ College with only minutes to go.
The players then came back fighting and showed great resilience to turn the gas on one last time. Suddenly, Josh Green found the net and the boys celebrated his late equaliser like they had just won the league.
The boys felt they could have won this match, but after a 4-1 deficit, the 5-5 draw was a good result and probably what both teams deserved.
Goals: Josh Green (2), Jack Kennedy, Oliver Jones and Dylan Stark.
