The Red and White Stripes head to Florida
The Selwyn United dominated Futsal team are off to the World Championships in Florida next week!
January 2019 saw the Red and White Stripes embark on an adventure to the Gold Coast where they competed in the Craig Foster Cup. It was the teams second stint at the tournament having previously been, so they were going into this years tournament with a little more experience.
This experience proved invaluable as the boys not only won the Craig Foster Cup, but in doing so, secured themselves a place at the Futsal World Championships in Florida.
Having spent endless amounts of time fundraising, training and organising the 16-hour long expedition, the boys and their parents are set to jet off next week. As a club, we are extremely proud of the hard work from the boys on the court, the commitment from parents to ensure this trip happens, and the expertise from Benji Lapslie (Head Coach) and Nick Ager (Assistant Coach).
As Head Coach Benji Lapslie says he can't wait for the boys to get out on the court in Florida:
"Over the last 6 months many hours of hard work has been put in by these lads to have the best opportunity to succeed on the international stage. For the kids it’s an opportunity of a life time to succeed and have the chance to play teams ranked #1 in the world. Raw emotion can take control so keeping them calm and relaxed will be the biggest test."
We look forward to following the team's journey and wish the boys the best of luck!
