Selwyn United Football Club Special General Meeting followed by Annual General Meeting

Thursday 16 December 2021 6.30pm at The Dugout, Selwyn Sports Centre, Rolleston

We would like to extend a warm welcome to our Special General Meeting and our end of year Annual General Meeting.

First up we will have a Special General Meeting to vote on the amendments to our Constitution. We have made a number of changes to bring it up to date, further details are provided in the Agenda.

Once the Special General Meeting is finished we will commence the Annual General Meeting for 2021.

Board Member Nominations

The board of Selwyn United Football Club is seeking new members and welcomes expressions of interest from our football members.
The Board operates as a collective and is made up of representatives from our football membership.

Purpose of the Board
The Board is ultimately accountable for the good governance and performance of Selwyn United Football Club. It is an entrusted role of utmost importance, and all board members have a legal requirement to act at all times within the bounds of the duties of good faith, for proper purpose, reasonable care and due and proper attention to the discharge of the role as a board member.
Board members are not expected to become involved in specific administrative matters, or matters of management in individual teams. The Board do however have an important role in communicating the Club's vision, mission, special character, and upholding and modelling its values amongst the wider community.

Personal Attributes Required of Board Members

As a Board Member, you need:

1. Objectivity

• Independent thinker, despite personal and family interests

2. Strategic perspective

• ‘Helicopter’ view

3. Courage

• Ask the tough question … and the next question

• Willingness to prepare for and participate in Board meetings

• Take responsibility and follow through on a given assignment

• Open doors in the community

• Evaluate oneself

4. Ability to work as a team member

• Collective responsibility

• Willingness to develop skills for the benefit of the board

• Reading and understanding financial statements

5. Personal characteristics

• Honesty, sensitivity, tolerance of differing views, a friendly, responsive, and patient approach, community-building skills

• Personal integrity, a sense of values, concern for SUFC’s ongoing welfare and development

• Ability to listen, analyse, think clearly and creatively, and work well with individuals and groups

• A sense of humour

Competencies Required of Board Members

In supporting the appointment of a nominee as a new Board member, the Board seeks to have the right balance of skills and experience in order to operate in a strong and cohesive manner.

Key competencies of board members are:

  • Understanding of governance and the role of the Board
  • Strong commercial/business judgement
  • Ability to think strategically for the medium to long term interests of the Club
  • Able to articulate thoughts and communicate effectively and clearly
  • Strong affinity with the Selwyn United Football Club community


    Particular skills/competencies sought at this time.
    We are seeking expressions of interest from interested people, one or more of the following skills:
  • Business Growth, Marketing, and Communication
  • ICT, digital knowledge, particularly of technology industries

We encourage applications from people who reflect and represent the Club's diversity of backgrounds.


Commitment Required
Board meetings occur every month, on the second Tuesday of the month at 6.30 pm. Appointment would be for an initial term of 3 years.

Other Information
Board members participate on a voluntary basis.

If you know of someone who has provided outstanding special services or contributions to the game within the club to be considered as a life member, please forward a brief account of the candidate's service and or contribution to the board for their consideration. 

Nominations are required by 2 December 2021 and can be emailed to board@sufc.nz

If you have any remits you would like to be considered at the Annual General Meeting please forward these to the board by 2 December 2021, remits can be emailed to board@sufc.nz
