Selwyn United Welcome Southern United Academy to Foster Park

Abi McCullagh —

The school holidays saw the Southern United Academy travel up to our very own Foster park to play a variety of games against some of our Selwyn Talent Centre squads.

The school holidays tend to be a busy time for football here at Selwyn and these holidays were no different. The Southern United Academy made their annual trip up to Christchurch to play a host of games against our 13's, 14's, 15's and 17's STC squads.

All in all, these games were a good chance for our STC players to showcase their skills against the Southern United Academy players and see how they match up against the Federation. These games were made more challenging by having a number of STC players away at FTC camps and Futsal tournaments. However, it gave opportunities to some of our younger players as they were asked to step up and play in the next age group up from themselves which can be both nerve-racking and exciting!

Our Director of Football, Chris Brown says he was very pleased to have Southern United come back to Foster Park for another round of games:

"Last week saw a great few days of football for all involved. We are lucky to have a very good relationship with Southern United through Paul O’Riley and Conor O’Keeffe."

"By having these mid-season games against Southern, our players get to test themselves against teams they have never played before. Our players are also given the opportunity to play against some of the best players in Dunedin while being looked at by Southern United’s (National League Franchise) head coach: Paul O’Riley. This is yet again another fantastic pathway for our players to be exposed to."

A big thank you to Paul O’Riley and Conor O’Keeffe for bringing your players up to Christchurch. It is great to maintain this relationship between ourselves and we all look forward to having you and your players come back up to Foster Park in near the future.
