Principal's Corner Week 7

Carolyn Crow —

Next week you will be able to have a look at the latest progress your child has made on their learning journey.

We often refer to learning as a journey, because it has many things in common with physically making your way from one point to another.

Sometimes the journey is quickly completed; sometimes there are barriers along the way that slow progress. Occasionally you might have to go back, before moving forward again. While one person might take the direct route, another might head off along side roads.  Some people like to travel independently, while others prefer to go along with the group.

You might see similar patterns in your child's learning. One child's journey will be different from that of another, but if they are making progress towards their destination then you can be assured that generally, they will all get to the same place.

Our teachers are there to motivate and guide them to keep heading in the right direction and to support them in finding ways around things that might slow their progress.

Knowing they have the support of parents and whanau is also important in helping them on this journey.  So we encourage you to spend some time with your child, looking at the goals they have achieved (the places they have seen), discussing what things might have slowed them down or made the journey hard, (similar to getting a flat tyre or encountering some road works), and thinking about what has made the learning enjoyable (interesting people and places along the way).

And we ask that you remember the power of the word "yet" when reflecting on the things they haven't been able to master - not "I can't do that", but "I can't do that yet", which implies confidence that they will succeed.
