2019 Primary Schools Rugby Festival - Round 1

Andrew Smart —

Sherwood's rippa/tackle rugby teams travel to Windsor Park to take part in first round games.

Sherwood's rippa/tackle teams made their way to East Coast Bays Rugby Club on Thursday 23rd May. The atmosphere in the bus was electric as it entered the carpark. Passersby would have heard and felt the rumbling and thumping of 43 students chanting "Sherwood! Sherwood! Sherwood!

This year we have 4 teams participating in the festival:

- Year 3&4 mixed rippa
- Year 3&4 mixed rippa
- Year 5&6 mixed rippa
- Year 5&6 tackle

Our teams attend three festivals throughout Terms 2 and 3 and get to play 3 games at each event. The first event kicked off with brilliant displays of team spirit, skill and sportsmanship. Our tackle team were unlucky not to get a win, however, improved after each game. The team's positive attitude and teamwork got them out of many tight spots. As I walked past the game, one of our players could be seen pushing back 5 opposing players! Crucial tackles were made time after time. Once the ball was back in the team's possession, our backs sped off, breaking out of tackles getting closer and closer to that elusive try line. Well done lads, you should be proud of yourselves.

The rippa teams hit the ground running and were eager to get stuck into their games. For some students, it was their first time attending one of these festivals but they acted like they had been going for years! Both teams worked hard on the field, coming away with multiple wins. They were great ambassadors on and off the field.

This year we are incredibly lucky to have a crew of Long Bay College students helping our teams, a number of them being ex-Sherwood students themselves. It was fantastic seeing the links being made between the two schools. We would like to thank Paul Field and Teresa Underwood for helping organise the college helpers. I would also like to thank the parents who came along and supported the teams, your help is greatly appreciated.
