Oneroa Kāhui Ako Matariki Festival

Jo Apperley —

Friday 21st June, Sherwood hosted the very first Oneroa Kāhui Ako Matariki Festival where 6 schools came together to celebrate the start of the Māori New Year.

Sherwood Primary was proud to host the first Oneroa Kāhui Ako Matariki Festival. Opened by our Kaumatua, Matua Rawiri Wharemate, Northcross Intermediate presented a unique drama expressing their interpretation of Matariki.

Sherwood’s Kapahaka group opened the Kapahaka Section in full force, followed by Torbay, Glamorgan, Oteha Valley and Long Bay Primary Schools finishing with Northcross Intermediate and Long Bay College.

Hon. Chris Hipkins, Minister of Education and his team were welcomed in with a karanga given by our very own student leader. We were also honoured to have the Education Gazette Team join us. It was indeed a very special occasion for our tamariki.

A mention must go to our kapahaka group for their hard work and dedication to giving their best, especially our leaders that day! Fantastic Job done.
