Carolyn Crow —

It's Book Week - one of my favourite weeks of the year!

In the last newsletter, I talked about how exciting I find digital technologies and the opportunities they open up for all of us, including our children.

One area that has been dramatically changed by technology is reading books. I have to say that I still love the look and feel of a real book and try to indulge my love of reading with the "real" thing as often as possible. Visiting the school library, the public library, a book shop (or our school book fair) is still an enjoyable experience for me. And we find that our children tend to love those experiences too.

However, digital technology has expanded our ability to access books, which can be very convenient. As avid readers both my husband and I regularly borrow books online from the Auckland City Libraries. Some are e-books that can be read much like a regular book. Others are audiobooks, great for listening to in the car. They have a great range of children's books in both these formats. All you need to do is sign up for a library card at our local library and I'm sure the staff can get you started. One extra advantage is that they are returned automatically on the due date - no fines for overdue books!

And time spent reading is always time well spent. As teachers, we really value the support and encouragement you give to developing your child as a reader. The words of Dr Seuss above are very true, whatever way they choose to read.
