Diving New Zealand Talent Programme Visits Sherwood

Andrew Smart —

Students in Years 3 to 6 have a taste of Olympic Diving through the Diving New Zealand Talent Programme

Over the course of this week, students from Year 3 to 6 took part in a Diving Talent Testing session. The sessions were run by current and past Olympic and Commonwealth Diving athletes/coaches from New Zealand and England. The aim of the programme is to introduce students to the sport of Diving, identify talent and provide information as to how they can get involved.

Each class got to explore a sport that isn't widely known. They experienced movements that are used in the sport of Diving such as jumping, squatting, making shapes like the tuck and pike and learning how divers hold their arms and hands when entering the water. Students got ask questions about what it's like to compete in Olympic and Commonwealth events.

The programme is an exciting initiative to find potential Olympic champions, whilst opening a sport up to those who may enjoy something new in a recreational setting. Students were handed out flyers with more information about taking part in Diving which includes a free 30 minute taster session at either West Wave or Glenfield Pool. If your child didn't receive one or has lost theirs and is interested in Diving then please contact Andrew at andrews@sherwoodprimary.school.nz
