Rimu Learning

Treaty of Waitangi Mini Inquiry

Health Inquiry:

Life Education - Building positive friendships. Our key concepts are - showing kindness and empathy towards others, building resilience and being able to solve social and emotional problems.

Other Inquiry Learning Area - Social Sciences:

Knowledge of New Zealand History is an integral part of being a New Zealand citizen. We will cover three main events in our NZ History including Bastion Point (Māori land issues), the Tangiwai disaster, and the Chinese Gold rush. The students will choose an event to do their own project on at the end of the inquiry.

The Big idea: Our view of history shapes how we view the present. The past can make us who we are.

Lines of Inquiry:

  • There are many worthwhile reasons to know about history.

  • In history people explored the world in different ways for different reasons, resulting in the meeting of different cultures.

  • The past contributes to who we are today, and we can find evidence of the past in the present.

Literacy:

Reading -The main comprehension skill we will target is summarising. Students will be able to summarise the texts by picking out the main characters and the events that took place in the story. This will help students notice the most important ideas in the text and discard irrelevant information. However, comprehension skills are taught according to the students’ level and needs.

Writing -

We will learn the purpose and the structure of the information report with an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Being able to categorise researched information under different headings will also be taught. We will focus on paraphrasing the information they have gathered.
In the second half of the term, we will start exploring different aspects of a narrative. This will include a hook, describing the setting and the characters.

Oral Language - Students will join in class and group discussions. Share their work with their peers and give constructive feedback and feed forward. They will take turns reading the class quote and lead discussions.

Library Day - Thursday

Maths:

Number - In our number system, each place value is a power of 10, and this continues infinitely. Multiplication and division problems can involve equal groups, rates, comparisons, combinations, part-whole relationships, areas, and volumes.

In year 5, children will know how to:

  • recognise, read, write, order, partition, recombine, and represent whole numbers up to 1,000,000.

  • add and subtract whole numbers and decimals to two places.

Statistics -

Our students use the statistical processes to:
