Monique Gladding from Auckland Diving (who represented Great Britain in Diving at the London 2012 Olympics) visited Sherwood.

Students watched a video of what the sport looks like at a professional level followed by activities where students practiced and experienced the movement skills used in diving.

It was interesting to watch especially without a pool or diving board. However, the students demonstrated some awesome skills and hopefully walked away with new knowledge.

As part of the visit, students from Sherwood are invited to attend a free diving session at either Glenfield Pool or Westwave Pool. Information flyers were handed out to students about this. However, this is open to anyone from Year 1 to Year 6. A few years ago, a student at Sherwood attended one of these classes and now represents New Zealand in her age group and is off to Singapore later this year to compete.

A little about Auckland Diving:
Auckland Diving provides professionally run classes for brand new divers, right through to competitive training at Olympic level. We have two clubs within our program, Diving Waitakere and North Harbour Diving.

Diving is a fun, dynamic and unique sport which helps develop agility, strength, coordination and deep water confidence. Our divers come from varied backgrounds including gymnastics, cheerleading, rugby players, kids who enjoy jumping off wharves/pool sides and those that just love to be in the water. Classes are suitable for people from five years through to adult; provided participants can comfortably swim in deep water. No diving experience is necessary.
