Planting Day in action

Karla AndersonMay 14, 2024

Last week we had a stunning day to fill and plant our newly built garden beds.

A huge thank you to Bunnings for the soil, compost and vegetable seedlings to plant our new garden beds. We had groups of students from across the school get involved alongside our wonderful parent helpers Joyce, Maria, Victoria, Helen as well as Pooja from Bunnings & Sarah from Sustainable Schools/Enviroschools.

Each group worked together to fill the garden bed, add compost and fertilizer and then plant a range of winter vegetables. Also, a big thank you to Alison for donating a grape vine from her garden.

The key learning of the day:

  • teamwork, communication skills, connecting to nature and learning how to grow food
  • variety of herbs, grapes, vegetables, brassicas, root veg & vine vegetables
  • companion planting, spacing, labelling, estimated grow to maturity
  • how to plant seedings, support frames, how deep etc... & watering around the drip line and why
  • discussed natural pest control
  • follow-up learning was to recycle a plastic bottle to make a cloche-mini glasshouse to support young plants from cold weather conditions and wind.

We look forward to the plants growing and harvesting and learning as this area develops.

Our next steps are to add a plum tree, 3 more garden beds & a compost bay. We hope you enjoy watching the video of the planting groups day in the garden.

If you would like to get involved or offer support please touch base with Mrs Anderson.
