Cricket:

vs Timaru BHS

The game against Timaru wasn't the best game we'd played this year. It was a game of patience. First innings we batted, and had a great start being 90 runs for 2 wickets. But later on, due to mistakes from the batters coming afterwards we were bowled out for 140. With Jayant Goldsworthy top scoring with 42. We then went on to field against them and bowled really well, but just at the end we gave it away by letting the other team getting first innings on us. They went on to put 165 all out. Ekamjot picked up a 5 wicket bag and Tanurag getting three. Day 2 of cricket was rained off.

vs Kings High School

The first day started when Beckham (King's captain) and Tanurag flipped the coin. Beckham won the toss and chose to bat. We started the match with Tanurag and Jaime opening the bowling, both kings openers getting off to a good start with Tanurag picking up the first wicket. Star efforts with the bowling was Ekamjot Singh who picked up 4 wickets and the others being spread around the bowlers. Kings set a total of 288 for 8 as they declared and put us in to bat as we tried to chase down the total the opening batsmen got off to a good start as the first wicket fell pretty quickly. Star efforts with the bat were Jayan Goldsworthy 56, Tanurag Singh 40 and Connor McLaughlin 30. We then collapsed a bit with the bat and failed to reach the follow on and the Kings captain decided to put us back in to bat for the rest of the day (10 mins). This resulted in Alex Trowbridge and Conor McLaughlan batting out the rest of the day successfully and at the end of the days play Shirley boys high school 1st XI were 2-0. We then came back the following day with it being raining in the early morning, the rain then stopped for enough time that we were able to get play this was only for about 30 minutes and no wickets were lost. It then decided to rain and keep raining. The two captains met and decided that there was to be no more play and the match would end in a draw. ~Ryan Entwistle Yr 13

Volleyball:

vs Christchurch BHS

On the 24th of February we played against Christchurch Boys High School at Pioneer Stadium best out of 5 games. The game started off very slow, we weren’t hitting our shots, serving out a lot and miscommunicating. At 12-12 our Coach called a time out, our heads weren’t where they should’ve been because we all knew we weren’t playing at out best. Coach then reminded us of our jobs like screening the serve, serving on a target and swinging high and hard. After this timeout we started to get back in our rhythm and we started to get some kills and some blocks. We finished the first set at 25-21. We were still under playing due to the low level of competition. The second set stayed at the same sort of pace; we had a little bit more of intensity and this was where we started getting more kills showing off our talent. The second set SBHS won with a more comfortable lead of 25-18. Knowing that we only had to win one more set we calmed down and just played our game, blocking, passing, setting and spiking our way to an easy victory over Christchurch boys 25-19.

Player of the day Tahlor Cahill as a middle blocker, getting a few block kills and swing hard through the middle connecting well with his shots. Overall 3-0 in sets and we are continuing our streak of no sets against us and hope to continue this through the Kings exchange on Monday and Tuesday and in the coming Mainland’s tournament over the 6th,7th and 8th.

South Island Tournament:

This past weekend the 6th,7th and 8th of March Shirley Volleyball were in a tournament. These team were made up of Most of the top South Island teams. We were split up into two pools, in our pool we had and the scores we had against the teams were Burnside (3-1 win), Marlborough (3-1 win), Middleton grange (3-1 win), Otago Boys (3-1 win) and Waimea (3-1 win). This placed us in the number one spot in our pool with Waimea who only lost to us but were a very strong side. Shirley went through to the semi-finals being put against the 2nd placed team in the other pool which was Saint Andrews College. The semi-final was Played at 8:30am On the Sunday morning this was a big game due to STAC’s new coach and Shirley’s ex-coach Luke Hulston. Therefore their team knew every play and players strengths and weaknesses we had. We had played STAC before but this time they had there whole team, all of them were big bigger than us but we knew they were less experienced. It was quite an easy win with Shirley clean sweeping them 3-0. Through to the finals and we were PUMPED! The other semi-final finished with Waimea beating Riccarton (3-1). We Already beat them so we knew we had the tools to take the title but they were still and great side with a very smart setter and well-rounded hitters. We went into the Finals fired up and ready to win all the Shirley Army was there to support us. Shirley took the first set 25-18 with lots of nice kills and blocks. Waimea took the second set with a close game of 25-23. At this point we knew we had to step our game up, we took the third set 25-20 this was because of our precise passing and setting with hitting coming from this. The Fourth and final set we fort our hardest and it payed off win with a comfortable lead 25-21. It was a hard fort game by Waimea and big props to them for the game it was a great final. Shirley was stoked because we previously lost to them last year in the south island tournament final. ~Josh Watson yr 13
