Cando Card Update

SBHS —

2023 is the last year that Environment Canterbury will partner with the Cando card, allowing it to be used as a Metrocard on buses and the ferry in Greater Christchurch.

In the second half of 2024, Environment Canterbury will be the first to launch the new National Ticketing Solution (NTS) for public transport. This will replace all existing Metrocards, including the Cando card.

Cando cards will continue to be accepted on Metro services until the NTS is launched. We will keep you updated on the launch date for NTS and provide more information as we get closer to roll out.

What is the NTS?

The NTS will simplify payment for public transport around New Zealand. Customers will be able to pay for their public transport using contactless debit or credit cards, digital payments like Google Pay, as well as a NTS pre-paid card.

Canterbury will be the first region to implement the NTS in the second half of 2024.

Environment Canterbury will be in contact with all schools earlier in 2024 about the new system and how we can assist your students with the transition.

Will Cando cards still exist?

Cando cards are student ID cards that provide several services, including discounts, rewards, and some school services.

Metro will continue to recognise the Cando card as a form of ID and proof of age.

Ecardz Authenticate Ltd. will be in contact to discuss how the Cando card can continue as a useful ID card for your students.
