Basketball

Congratulations to Senior A Basketball captain Eacan Westwood (Year 13) and Year 11 Joel Jeffrey who were selected to play in the McDonalds Thomson Trophy Allstar game which was played on Friday the 8th of July. Both players were selected to the Eastern Allstars for their consistent performance in the McDonalds Thomson Trophy games so far this season.

Other Senior A Basketball team members, Josh Merrin, Sean Kelly, Bailey Hern and Hamsa Shire participated in the Under-19 National Tournament in Nelson representing the Canterbury B team.

Joel Jeffrey was part of the Canterbury in Under-17 A team that placed third at the National Tournament in Auckland over the holidays.

Year 12 Saint Porter, and Year 11s Oscar Toone, Josh Thompson, Tyreice Tuliau and Wiremu Waaka also completed at the same National Tournament for the Canterbury Under-17 B team.

Loyal Patelesio (Year 10) and Greg Rodger (Year 9) were members of the Canterbury Under-15A and Under-15B teams respectively that took part in their National Tournament over the holidays in Wellington.

Former student Patrick Rodger (left last year) was part of the Canterbury Under-19 A team that placed 2nd in the Nelson Tournament.

Well done to all those boys for representing Canterbury at the various National Tournaments over the past few weeks.

Volleyball Success

Jonah Drye, Luke Hulston and Josef Berry have been selected in the NZ Under-19 development team and are currently training hard for their tour to Australia in September.

Mana Placid was last week selected for the Under-17 South Island team which will also be playing on the Gold Coast later this year. Willem Button was named as a non-travelling reserve.

In addition Luke Hulston and Josef Berry were selected for the Shirley Silverbacks Men’s A club team earlier this year. They have been participating in the Southern Volleyball league during the weekends and will be participating in the Club Nationals competition in Week 1 of Term 3. To be playing at this level while still at school is relatively rare. These two are setting the bar high and are very positive role models for our boys.

A reminder to all volleyball boys that Canterbury Volleyball trials are being held soon. All information is found on Canterbury Volleyball's website. http://www.canterburyvolleyball.org/

Ice Hockey

After a few years of SBHS not having it's own Ice Hockey team, this year we are currently 'TOP OF THE TABLE!' in the Christchurch High School League. We are ahead of STAC, Boys High, Cashmere HS and Burnside HS. What a great achievement. A big congratulation to the team and those who are new to ice hockey this year. They are developing skills and strategies each time on the ice and we are all having so much fun. Come along and support us play at Alpine Ice. Its free to watch.

Inline Hockey

The Shirley Boys Inline Hockey team took six players to the Nelson College Sports Exchange at the Nelson Indoor Inline Hockey Rink. Four players and a goalie were fielded by each team, with players on the bench to regularly substitute.

Finley Forbes, our goalie, is our most experienced Inline player and faced many shots-on by the more-practised Nelson team.

Shirley began the game with two quick goals. Nelson came back with one before the end of the first quarter. However, when the game resumed in the second quarter, Nelson took the lead and built on this throughout the game. Shirley did manage another two goals before full time.

It was good to have the Shirley First XI Field Hockey team turn up to support us. The new players helped entertain them with some amusing crashes.

Although the final score was a 9-4 win to Nelson College, it was a lot of fun.
