Earthquake Evacuation Procedure

Tim Grocott —

Shirley Boys’ High School is thinking of our community as we come to terms with another major earthquake in the Canterbury area. The earthquake on Monday morning reminded us how important it is to keep our community informed. Below are the procedures for when a full evacuation of the school is required following a significant earthquake. Generally this is when the event is over a magnitude 5.0, or if we are advised by Civil Defence or emergency services.

 1. Evacuation alarm activated .

 2. Students leave the buildings and report to the tennis courts (or football field, if appropriate).

 3. Parents/caregivers will be notified by text message. This text will read: “SBHS students have been evacuated. If no contact with son made, please report to reception or ring 3757057”.

4. Students will be checked off by Form Teachers to ensure accuracy of attendance.

 5. Boys may be collected by their parents/caregivers only or someone nominated by the parents/caregivers. All parents/caregivers need to report to the main reception area –‘H’ Block.

 6. If parents/caregivers are unable to collect their boys, they may text them requesting permission to go home. Those students who receive texts from parents need to have these verified by the Form Teacher before releasing.
