Donating Blood

Sandra McKernan —

Last month the NZ Blood Service held a mobile blood drive at Shirley Boys' High School.

This was a very successful blood drive and surpassed all targets once again.

We had 59 students and staff going along to donate.  Only eight were deferred, this is a very low rate, as students were very proactive in reading the eligibility criteria and not attending if they were sick. Of the 51 people who completed the donation process, 40 were new donors.

Each donation can save up to three lives, because the Blood Service separates the unit into red cells, plasma and platelets.  The students and staff who donated could save up to 153 lives, which is amazing.
