Softball
Nikora Wikiriwhi has been selected for the New Zealand U15 Development Sox team for softball.
He made the selection playing in a South Island vs North Island game Live on SkySport for the International Softball Challenge Cup in Auckland recently. Shirley Boys High School also got a "shout-out" from the commentators when they introduced Nikora.
Nikora currently plays for the Canterbury U15 team, It is from this that he got the chance to go to NZ selections, as his team won the South Island Competition down in Dunedin.
He also plays for RKS (Richmond Keas) club which he is in the U16 team and also the U19 team.
Surf Lifesaving
Xyron Burns competed against Surf lifesaving teams from all over the South Island, at the Senior Southern Regional Championships, held at New Brighton on 25 and 26 February and won a silver medal in the 2km beach run. Xyron is a member of the North Beach Surf Lifesaving Club.
Last weekend, William Simmons was placed third in the under 14 board race at the Canterbury Championships. William is a member of the Sumner Surf Life Saving Club.
Three year 10 boys attended the junior national surf life saving competition in Mount Manganui from 2nd-5th March.
Xyron Burns represented North Beach SLSC, Jessie Webb represented Waimari SLSC, and William Simmons represented Sumner SLSC. The boys did themselves proud, making it through heats, quarters, and semi finals in various events, out of a field of 120 competitors in their under 14 age group.
Cycling
Ezra Williams-Gillies has been selected to represent Canterbury (as a region) at the Age Group Track Nationals, which are being held at the Avantidrome in Cambridge, New Zealand from 15th - 21st March. Information on this event by going to the Cycling New Zealand website.
Ezra will be riding his first year in under 17s. His focus will be on his sprints and pursuits. He rides for the Canterbury Time Trial Association (as a club) and also represents Shirley Boys for School Road Cycling.
