House 7s

Jamyn Keats —

The annual House 7s commenced in the final week of Term 3. The event is always met with expectation and the house rivalry really comes to the fore when the boys are unleashed into contact sport! To add to the weight of this year’s competition was the performance of another top 1st XV season (the boys finished 2nd in the UC Cup) and spots for the SBHS 7’s team that would be attempting to qualify for Condors later in the year.

From the outset it was clear that Aoraki (last year’s champions) and Mullins would be the favourites to contest the final and this proved the case at the conclusion of round robin play.

After a rugged week of play, and some surprise performances by non-rugby playing students, the finals were set go on the final Friday of school.

A bumper crowd, in top conditions, were on hand to witness Blake house account for Snell in a lively 3 vs 4 curtain-raiser.

The highly anticipated big show down between the power-houses of the competition didn’t disappoint. The match was a bruising encounter and a showcase for the 7’s game with some wonderful skills and play on display. Mullins turned up to play and dominated early by excellent ball retention and use of width. Aoraki, after being stunned early, clawed its way back into contention from a big deficit through the likes of Cruz Topai-Aveai and Logan Bell. When a crucial attacking lineout presented itself with three minutes still left on the clock, and the game in the balance, Aoraki were set to mount an assault on the lead. This was not meant to be. Star player of the tournament Mahaki Koopu made a timely intercept from a poor throw in which eventuated into a 90 metre try and sealing the deal for a famous Mullins victory.

Congratulations Mullins and everybody that participated in a top tournament.
