The school House Cross Country took place on the afternoon of Thursday 19th May 2016.

This year the event was compulsory for all Year 9, 10 and 11 students which was an initiative from the student Sports Council. Competitors ran a 2.9km (juniors)/3.6km (Yr 11, 12 and 13) course around the school and detouring up North Parade and a short run through the Shirley Intermediate field.

It was the biggest turnout for a number of years (close to 800 participants), especially from the Yr 12 and 13 students. This was aided by the clash of the codes cup which was up for grabs between school first teams. The Rowing team won on the day leaving the Rugby, Rowing, Surfing, Basketball and Hockey players in its wake.

All other runners were competing for House points and the results were as follows:

1. Snell

2. Mullins

3. Aoraki

4. Blake

Cross Country and Road Race

The off-track season is just finishing and we had a limited amount of boys competing.

The Canterbury Road Race Championships took place on 19 May at the A & P Showgrounds site. This was a change of venue because North Hagley Park paths were being repaired, but was also held a week later than expected because of this fact. That created a clash with the SBHS Cross Country Championships, so some boys opted to stay at school to compete.

George Belcher was our sole Junior boys rep and he endured a torrid day in the nor-westerly wind around the main pavilion areas of the Showgrounds. He finished 32nd in his 3km race in 12:26.

The Senior boys produced a good solid result to finish 3rd in the teams event behind St Bede’s and CBHS. Jacob Sullivan was home in 11th place clocking 17:45 for the 4km distance, an excellent result and reward for the extra training. Logan Evans was 19th in 19:00, Jacob Allen was 25th in 19:46 and Reece Chalklen 27th in 19:57.

Twelve days later, the Canterbury Cross Country Championships were held at Halswell Quarry in absolutely disgusting weather conditions. Persistent southerly rain fell all day and although the course is designed with a major hill climb and many ups and downs through swales, by the end of the day there were eight “water jumps” around each lap.

It truly was a battle of survival and our smallest team ever to compete did well to run enthusiastically. George Belcher repeated his Road race effort in the Junior boys 3km. Tyson Belworthy toiled through the mud in 16:59 in the Intermediate 3km in 27th place. And Jacob Sullivan unleashed a withering final sprint to be awarded 11th place in 14:25 for the Senior 4km race. I thought he was desperately unlucky not to make the top ten as from my angle he got his shoulder ahead in the lunge for the line, but the judge ruled otherwise. A big improvement by Jacob this year in both disciplines, so it will be interesting to watch his future progress.

Congratulations to all the boys who competed for the school over a range of surfaces and in totally different weather conditions.

Rugby 1st XV

The 1st XV has enjoyed a solid start to the UC Championship season, suffering only one close loss after seven games. A squad of fifty had enjoyed a live-in camp at St Kevin’s College in Oamaru during the April holidays. While there they played a number of games against various Otago and South Canterbury schools, and enjoyed the many sights of the Oamaru district. The highlight was definitely a multiple run up the steep Kakanui Beach hill and the subsequent water recovery session….a joy to watch! Nearly as good was the following day’s post match session at the beach near the North Otago Golf Club. Wild, exposed, deep gravelly sand, a cold autumn day and twelve minutes in the freezing water. A great team building exercise!

The squad had 16 boys returning with 1st XV experience and they have been joined by an enthusiastic group who have embraced the squad culture under Head Coach Allan Lindsay. New coaches to join Allan this season are former SBHS 1st XV lock (2003) Hayden Mitchell and former Christ’s College and current Metro U16 coach Arthur Wood. SBHS Old Boy Brett Williamson is coaching the 2nd XV with Brian Griffiths, another man with Press Cup experience from Aranui HS. Bill Barry is managing the 2nd XV and Scott Taylor is assisting me with the 1st XV.

The UC Championship season began with an away game in Ashburton where we enjoyed a relatively comfortable 38-14 victory. We had a Bye the following week and so until we play Nelson in late June, we will always have played less games than the other teams. In subsequent weeks we defeated Roncalli 76-3, Marlborough 8-7 in a rugged defensive match and Burnside 19-5 in another tough battle. Then followed an unfortunate outing in Timaru where we just failed to fire in all areas, and although we had the opportunity to win, we didn’t take our chances losing 15-17.

The Kings Exchange occurred a couple of days later and with nine debutants from the wider squad, they did very well to repel our southern brothers 24-17. Our next UC game was against Rangiora and we got back to our winning ways with a bonus point 29-0 victory. We are currently sitting 4th on the ladder on 24 points and have either a game or two in hand compared to those around us. Some tough games loom ahead, but the squad is in good heart, we are relatively injury-free and good depth is being developed.

Crusaders at Shirley Boys'

On Thursday the 19th of May, the University of Canterbury (UC), in partnership with the BNZ Crusaders, arranged for three Crusaders to visit Shirley Boys to assist in the development of our UC Championship team. Nemani Nadolo, Sean Wainui, and Jack Goodhue were all keen to help the students hone their skills and pass on tips and techniques.

Marlborough Exchange:

Junior Basketball:

The Junior Basketball team had a strong showing against a well drilled Marlborough team. Mr Edwards coached a team that was made up of 8 year 10s and 2 year 9s. Year 10s Loyal Patelesio and Michael Tusani were the standout performers in the game. Loyal top scored with an impressive 31 points and Michael had a strong showing contributing 18 points.

Senior Basketball:

The Senior A Basketball had a dominant performance against the MBC senior A team. SBHS led from start to finish and this allowed some of the new young members in the team to play some good minutes. Leading scorers for SBHS were Joel Jeffrey with 17, Eacan Westwood 12, Josh Merrin and Jayden Watkinson 11, and Bailey Hern with 10.

Thompson Trophy – Senior A Bball Competition:

The Senior A team travelled down to Ashburton on Tuesday the 24th to play its first game against Ashburton College in many years. After an hour and a half in the mini van, and playing in a cold gym, the boys were lacking a little energy and trailed for most of the game. Luckily we managed to stay close enough to have a run a few minutes before the end of the game and managed to come away with a 3 point win 81-78. Bailey Hern had his best game so far for the A team and compiled a game winning 31 points. Year 11 Joel Jeffrey chipped in with 21 and Eacan Westwood had 11.

June 14 Game

SBHS 78 (Josh Merrin 20, Sean Kelly 15, Joel Jeffrey 12, Bailey Hern 11) beat Papanui 66

A good team effort with some very good pressure defence in the second half, gave SBHS a 20 point lead late in the 4th quarter. This allowed us to finish the game with some of the younger players and give them some valuable minutes at a higher level.

Canoe Polo Training Hard

The canoe polo team has decided they want to compete in the NZCPSISCs in Oamaru on the weekend of 5, 6, and 7 August. That’s, as I’m sure you’ve worked out, the New Zealand Canoe Polo South Island School Championships! Unfortunately everywhere else in the South Island canoe polo is a winter sport played in indoor heated swimming pools. In Christchurch, for reasons obvious to everyone, we don’t have the swimming pools so canoe polo is a summer sport played outside at Roto Kohatu, at the end of Sawyers Arms Road.

It’s no point going if we are not going to be competitive so the team have started training on Wednesday afternoons. Water for Roto Kohatu comes from the Waimakariri so there is a good incentive for an active practice to just keep warm. Team members are: Cole Yeoman (captain), Ben Klemick (vice-captain), Ashley Gutteridge, Callum Thompson, Olly Northmore and Jayden Rae. Only Cole and Ben have been to a previous NZCPSISC two years ago so the players will be building up their fitness and skills to be competitive over a whole weekend of competition.

Trampolining

Bradon Freeman won the Junior Elite men’s trampoline on Tuesday the 14th of June at the Canterbury gymnastic champs . His total of 50.375 was 2 points clear of the second place getter. This is his second year of winning the title.
