Travel Planning for the new school

Tim Grocott —

As part of the planning for the new school at the former QEII site, we have been considering travel options for boys.

A group comprising representatives from Shirley Boys’ and Avonside Girls’, Ministry of Education, Transport authorities, Environment Canterbury, and Christchurch City Council have been meeting to discuss safe and practical travel options for boys travelling to and from the new site when it opens in 2019. These have included cycle lanes, safe crossing points across busy roads, and bus bays for multiple buses at the beginning and end of the day.

In order to get a clearer idea of student travel, we will be conducting surveys of boys in Years 9, 10 and 11 to find out what is likely to be their predominant form of transport in 2019. This will also be supported by Abley Transportation Consultants. At the beginning of Term Two, they will be speaking to boys at the Travis Road and Frosts Road roundabout. These people will be clearly identifiable as staff from Abley Transportation and will have identification.
