SBHS Futsal marks Mosque Tragedies

Tom Davies —

SBHS Futsal Coach Tom Davies and Headmaster John Laurenson agreed that the Mosque tragedies of the 15th March should be marked by SBHS.

The Futsal teams were off to the Nationals in Wellington on the 26th March, we arranged to have a black Crescent and Star embroidered on our shirts. Our kit was admired by all teams from the whole country.

More recently, on the 7th June we arranged a 24 Hour Futsal Marathon at the SBHS gym from Friday 7.00pm to Saturday 7.00pm. This raised $1000 for Atta Elayyan the Futsal Whites Goal keeper who was in the Al Noor Mosque on the 15th and tragically lost his life, leaving his wife and young family fatherless.

On the 23rd June, we hosted the Eid Al Fitr Futsal tournament at SBHS. This included many members of our community playing in a highly competitive Futsal Tournament. Our team came a admirable Third.

As a result of this cooperation and brotherhood between our School and the Muslim Community, The Al Noor Mosque on Deans Ave requested one of our shirts. On Friday 28th June 2019 Tom Davies and John Laurenson, accompanied by Mostafa Rajabi, Mark Zimmerman, Uzair Qamar, Sarmad Qamar and Coaches Sam and Hamish Mitchell and Hemi Innes, attended prayers at the Mosque.

We presented a shirt worn by the Shirley Boys High School Senior Futsal Team at the New Zealand Nationals between 27-29 March 2019. It was produced as a sign of brotherhood with the Muslims in Christchurch and as a commemoration to the fallen on March 15 and was accepted by Imam Gamal Fouda. This will be displayed in the Mosque.
