Mike Skinner —

This week saw the Shirley Boys' High School 2020 Darts Open Championship decided.

At the start of the week 20 players had the hope of etching their name on the prestigious trophy.

There were a number of tight battles in the early rounds but the seeded ‘big name’ players managed to advance.

However, the number one seed and reigning champion, Tyler Phipps, was upset in an enthralling and see-saw semi-final by Leo Gilbert.

In the second semi-final, Kishan Patel bet a spirited Jaedyn Watson-Mam. Jaedyn will take hope for the future though – he was the only year 9 to progress to the semi-final stage, and the rest were all Year 13s.

The final was a marathon affair, spanning two days of play. Kishan was the favourite going into the match, as he had just recently hit his first ever 180. Leo had other ideas and played without fear of failure and prevailed 2-0.

Well done to all competitors.  The Premier League of Darts, featuring only the best players (students and staff) in the school is the next competition up.
