Emily Derham —

Are YOU interested in Gateway and its possibilities? Do YOU have a chosen career in mind? Are YOU interested in real life experiences? Come and chat to Mrs Derham, located in the Guidance/Transition Block.

Ben Hickey, Yr12

We visited Ben recently during his Gateway Placement at Cockram Nissan.

His role within the Service and Parts department includes fixing brakes, cleaning and putting back together various motor parts, car grooming and other routine maintenance tasks.

Ben is enjoying “getting stuck in and being hands on” within the workshop and having a variety of work each day making learning fun and interesting.

Ben’s other passion is Snowboarding where he is doing an Instructors Snowboarding Course at Mt Hutt earning him a further 12 credits at L2 & 3.

Sam Burgess (Yr13) and Ryan Buick (Y12) are currently placed at Lyttelton Engineering for their Gateway Programme where they are enjoying putting the theory taught in class to practical

learning in the workshop.

Both Ian and Mark (their Supervisors) have put these two through their paces with tasks such as cleaning out old and misplaced parts, cutting steel, learning and using various machinery and of course the odd floor sweep or two!

Engineers work very hard and often long hours with great salaries to match. It’s for those who wish “to get dirty” and be a part of projects such as ship repair, boiler manufacture and repair, steel fabrication and machining, and site installation and maintenance work.

Lyttelton Engineering is a large and privately owned company, check out http://www.lytteng.co.nz/projects for some of the big projects they did last year alone!

For the right person, apprenticeships and/or employment can be an option.
