SBHS Athletics Day

Our annual school athletics day was on the 2nd of March this year. This year’s events were altered slightly, as we had our competitive athletes out in the morning followed by everyone else after Interval.

This worked well, as it gave our competitive athletes a chance to really push themselves with less distractions. Many SBHS records came very close to being broken and students and staff all said they enjoyed this change.

After interval was where the fun began, as the whole school came out to compete for their houses at numerous different events. There were colours everywhere, flags flying and plenty of support when it came to our students supporting their houses. Relay races in the afternoon were definitely the feature races with the whole school crowding around the track trying to catch a glimpse of the action.

The 2023 Athletics Day Winners were Mullins! Snell in second, Blake in third and Aoraki in last.

Canterbury Athletics

The Canterbury Schools Athletics Championships were held over Tuesday the 14th and Saturday the 18th last week!

A strong contingent of SBHS students turned up to the Prelims on Tuesday and had a marvellous day out, with majority of our competitors qualifying for the finals on Saturday. Macrae Smith had his 3000m Final on Prelims Day and managed to come away with a Silver Medal to start off our campaign.

Saturdays Finals saw some very pleasing results with SBHS picking up 13 Medals (4 Gold, 3 Silver and 6 Bronzes). It was a great effort from everyone and awesome to see Jed Bunn picking up a Gold in High Jump and smashing his own PB!

Congratulations to all our students involved and thank you to all staff and parents for making it such a great couple days of events. We look forward now to South Islands in two weeks, down in Invercargill. Best of luck to Corbin Fahey, Will Sanders, Macrae Smith and Franco Vercueil who will all be making the journey down there after their dominate display at Canterbury Athletics.

A special shoutout to Isaac Brewster for bringing home 3 Gold Medals and setting a new Canterbury Record in the 200m!!!

Kings Exchange

Our annual Kings High School summer exchange took place over the 12th, 13th and 14th of March in some true Christchurch conditions.

Touch in the pouring rain was always going to be difficult against one of New Zealand’s best teams but the boys put up a great fight narrowly losing two games and drawing a third.

Our new SBHS Softball team kicked off their campaign with two very strong wins against Kings, we are looking forward to South Islands now as we know the calibre of players we have.

Water polo saw Kings come away with two Wins, our boys were in both games however were outclassed as the matches went on. We will be back next year!

Both our Junior and Senior Cricket team too the field on Tuesday after Monday was called off. We managed to finish both these fixtures even with the shorter time, which was great. Both teams played out of their skin too, picking up famous victories for SBHS.

Thanks to Kings High and all of our students and staff for embracing the weather and still putting on a show!

Exchange Score:

Kings 4 – 4 SBHS Draw
