International Relations - Munchang High School

Leanne Russ —

Term One waspacked with group visits from Korea, Thailand and France. Each group had a different focus so it was a very busy and exciting time as we learnt about different cultures, made new friends and contacts both in and out of the classroom.

Munchang High School Visit.

Our year started with a visit from Munchang High School from Korea. We look forward to these boys and their staff visiting every year.

The boys spent a very busy two weeks with us, doing English language studies in the morning and activities in the afternoon.

Cyclone Gita rained on our parade a little so we had to cancel our Akaroa trip.

This however gave us an opportunity to visit the Antarctic Centre and try Clip 'N Climb. Both activities proved to be a big hit.

This year we also visited Rubicon Valley for the first time.  Rubicon Valley is a working farm which offers an enjoyable and very interactive farm show. The boys saw sheep dogs in action and had a go at rounding up sheep. They tried their hand at drafting sheep. They heard all about alpacas and had a close-up photo opportunity with them. We had a true shearers' morning tea with fresh scones and whipped cream, and enjoyed a really delicious BBQ lunch.

After lunch the boys went Jet Boating, which is always very exhilarating and a highlight.

The activities are always a lot of fun but the true value of this programme lies in the wonderful relationships that are made both at school and with hosts.

The Munchang students enjoyed visiting  classes and interacting with the students.

Last year, a group of SBHS students visited Munchang High School, so it was great for Zach and Mitchell to be able to reciprocate and host the Korean group here in New Zealand.

SBHS is very lucky to have such generous hosts. They welcome the students with warmth and do their best to ensure they get a real taste of the kiwi life style. Part of that taste was very literal and Ms Nesbit taught the boys how to make the quintessential chocolate chip cookie.

It was a fun-filled, action-packed two weeks.

We are always sad to see the  Munchang visitors leave, but look forward to their next visit in 2019.
