Sport Development and Sport Academy
The following courses are available for study in 2026
Course description: The emphasis of these courses is to provide an area within the school in which talented and committed athletes can develop and learn both practical and theoretical skills through their chosen sporting context in a balanced and supportive environment.
Entry Criteria: Completed application form as per the Sport Development application process and meet the entry criteria below.
Must be selected AND be an active member of their chosen codes top team for Shirley Boys' High School (Junior or Senior 1st Team/A Team etc).
Gain applicable code teacher approval if a returning Year 11, 12 and 13 student. If a new applicant their Health and Physical Education teacher’s feedback will be sought.
Gain appropriate Teacher in Charge of Sport approval.
Attend trials which will occur at lunchtimes or after school (where applicable).
Fitness Testing scores from the previous year may be examined.
Individual athletes will need to obtain a reference from an external person such as a coach/trainer which outlines their history and success in their sport AND how they will support them in this programme.
Students' attendance and fortnightly grades will be examined in line with the Sporting compliance levels (Attendance >80% and an average fortnightly attendance grade >3.
Students who are currently enrolled in an SPD/SPA course must reapply for 2026.

Sport Development: 11SPD Full Year
Course Description: The emphasis of this course is to provide an area within the school in which talented and committed athletes can develop and learn both practical and theoretical skills through their chosen sporting context in a balanced and supportive environment.
Students will also get the opportunity to complete 15 Level 1 Physical Education credits. This class will study the following topics: Exploring the concept of Kotahitanga (Unity) and developing effective interpersonal skills through a range of team games and physical challenges, applying movement strategies in the context of Ki O Rahi and Ultimate Frisbee. Learning of Anatomy, Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, Socio-cultural factors, and Te Ao Maori concepts through physical contexts such as resistance training and other individual and team physical contexts.

Qualifications gained: 15 Level 1 NCEA credits
