Media Studies:   12Med   Full Year

Course Description: This course will examine a variety of topics relating to the mass media. There will be studies on genre, narrative, and representation focusing on the genre of horror films. An ethical issue in media will also be examined. Students may have the opportunity to research, and write material for the school magazine. Students may also be offered the option to attend a course on Radio production run by an external provider.

Recommended Entry Criteria: the course is primarily assessed in essay format and examinations. Therefore a good command of written English is essential. A minimum of a 12 credits from 11Ena/Enb is required, or 11His.

UE Literacy: Yes. Reading 4 credits. Writing 4 credits.

Media Studies:   13Med   Full Year

Course Description: In the course, students will examine two readings of a single film and issues relating to representation in the New Zealand media. The relationship between the genre of Film Noir and society will be explored, along with organisation and methods of control of film production in the Hollywood Studio era. Students will also carry out independent research on a significant development in the media. Opportunities to design and produce a media product may be offered to selected students.

Recommended Entry Criteria: the course is primarily assessed in essay format and examinations. Therefore a good command of written English is essential. A minimum of 10 credits from 12Med if studied (this is a change from previous years due to credit structure), otherwise 12 credits in 12Ena/Enb or 12His or 12Cla.
