Sport Classification

Sports and physical activities at Shirley Boys’ High School are classified as being Gold, Silver or Bronze: The Spartan Sports Committee sees it as a priority to support activities that have Gold status while realizing that it has an important role to play in having students actively involved when and where possible.

Gold Sports:  These sports are characterized by programmes that involve students in regular competition in interschool or club competitions from year 9 to 13.  They have five year development plans and are supported by the school’s Sport Development and Academy Programmes. Basketball, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Rugby, Volleyball, Rowing.

Silver Sports: These sports are characterized by involvement of students in competitive inter-school play from Year 9 to 13 and/or year-long opportunities to develop in the sport at Shirley Boys’ High School.  They may or may not have five year development plans and only limited opportunities will be available for support from the school’s Sport Development and Academy Programmes.  Futsal, Water Polo, Tennis, Touch, Mountain Biking, Sevens.

Bronze Sports: This group of sports are characterized by limited opportunities to compete and or train within the school.  The school will support students willing and able to compete in these events. Only limited opportunities will be available for support from the school’s Sport Development and Academy Programmes.  Athletics, Cross Country, Weight Lifting, Badminton, Table Tennis, Darts, Archery, Sport Climbing, Surfing, Swimming, Sevens, Fencing, Korfball, Ki-o-rahi, Ultimate Frisbee, Softball, Canoe Polo, Archery, Ice Hockey.

Sports may be added or deleted from this listing and/or may change category from year to year depending on certain factors deemed by the Spartans Sport Committee.
