Swimming

Flynn Macdonald placed first in the South Island Swimming Championships for the 100m and 200m breaststroke. He will now go to Nationals, representing both the South Island and the Jasi Swimming Club.

Badminton

Badminton at Shirley Boys High School has become very popular with many students wanting to be involved.

Again this year we entered four teams in the Wednesday Inter-school Competition, with two in the B grade and two in the C grade.

All teams played extremely well and made the Finals.

The two top teams who were expected to take the titles unfortunately didn’t have the best of games and were beaten into runner-up contention. While the two C grade teams were placed 1st and 2nd.

Team members:

  • A Team - Login Bramley (Captain), Uzair Qamar, Doug Kolien and Sarmad Qamar.
  • B Team - Lester Delizo (Captain), Blake Houtas, Josh Cuttance and Ethan De Rose.
  • C Team Seniors - Liam Currie (Captain), Reece Chalklen, Josh Escalera, Matthew Rodgers, Daniel Hodges and Yash Nand.
  • C Team Juniors - Quinn Bungard, Herrick Zhang, Ryan Agpalasi, Nikil Singh, Nehal Singh and Michael Livingston.

A big thank you to the staff who helped with transport or umpiring, without them we would not be able to be involved with the Inter-school Competition.

Ice Hockey

After a strong season playing in the Christchurch High Schools' League Ice Hockey Tournament on Saturday mornings, the Shirley BHS team took on St Andrews' College in the Finals on Saturday 17 September.

For our last game of the season, we had strong support from teachers, parents and friends and really appreciated the balloons, banner and loud vocal presence.

The first period saw STAC score two quick goals. We replied with our first goal from Matheson Graeme who managed to find a sliver of space open on the left post on a breakaway. STAC added another goal toward the end of the first period to make the total score 3-1 to STAC by the end of the first period. No goals were scored in the second period thanks to great defensive work with both teams throwing everything they had at each other, often escalating into a very physical game.

In the third period, the intensity of play went up a notch. Again we were strong in defence and managed to shut down STAC's barrage of offensive plays, and were the first to score with Matheson recording his 27th goal of the season (4th overall scorer of the High School League, an amazing effort considering he plays defence this season in a team with only 2 lines.) this levelled the score 3-2 to STAC who seemed rattled, having hoped to make this Final a one-way contest. Luke Hill from STAC managed to put one past Finley Forbes midway through third scoring on a defensive power play from the blue line. It seemed the luck was shining on STAC and they managed to add to their overall tally late in the 3rd.

The overall score was 5-2 to STAC in what was a high-paced and spirited contest. It was definitely our best game of the season with the boys delivering an outstanding performance right to the very end in a game that was quite entertaining to watch.

At the official prizegiving our players were recognized with Finley Forbes winning 'Goalie of the Tournament' and Captain Ryan Fraser got 'Defender of the Tournament'. It was a successful season where we established ourselves as a team of team-players. Appreciation goes to Ryan Fraser and Matheson Graham for encouraging and mentoring our rookies and advising on play between periods. We have some experienced players entering the team next year, so the 2017 season is going to be exciting.
