Senior Boys Futsal

Over the weekend of 5 and 6 March the Shirley BHS Senior Boys Futsal team competed in the Mainland Regional Championships.

It was a mixed tournament with wins against Waimea and Linwood and losses to Papanui and St Thomas.

In the end, despite good performances and some great play, we ended up coming 6th. The team comprised Hemi Innes (Captain), Jack Woolcott, Eli Austin, Alex Doherty, Aaron Browne, Hamsa Mohamed, Jacob Marsh, Danny Hayes, Lewis Cumiskey, Greg Sewell.  Joe Davies and Kevin Cumiskey helped with the coaching and managing of the team.  To be fair, the team failed to perform to the best of their ability and three injured players did not help.

Next month, the team goes to Nationals at Wellington and we hope for better success and a good tournament. This team has huge potential and I am sure they will do well.

Junior Futsal – Mainland Championships 2016

The weekend of 5 and 6 March were the Mainland Futsal Championships held across multiple venues across the city – Bishopdale YMCA, Catholic Cathedral College & CPIT. The Junior Futsal squad entered the tournament optimistically being unbeaten in the Wednesday Schools competition so far in Term 1. Saturday consisted of five group games with the opening game against St. Andrew’s College (2015 National Champions) resulting in a comprehensive 11-2 SBHS victory with captain Shaun Regaldo along with Year 9 students Josh Watson and Mark Zimmerman inter-changing the ball at high pace to create numerous opportunities to score. The second game against Lincoln High School proved to be a more gritty affair with SBHS having to show a great deal of patience & resilience to finally break down an aggressive and well-structured team. Some superb goalkeeping from Cameron Williams along with stern defensive work from Luca MacLeod-Watts, Sam Stevenson, Sam Mason & Isaac Russell resulted in a well-earned 5-3 victory. The third group game against, the tournament favourites, St. Thomas, was a cagey first half with the score at 4-4 with superb goals from Nick Smith and Ben Robson. An unfortunate injury to Cameron Williams resulted in his tournament ending but the good Shirley Man, Ben Robson stepped up to go into the goal for the remainder of the game. Ultimately, St. Thomas finished stronger, running out 9-6 winners. The fourth game against Waimea College started strongly as Shirley raced into a 4-0 half-time lead with some superb futsal from every player and the outstanding bravery of Mark Zimmerman and Josh Watson who both filled in as goalkeeper. The second half led to mixed fortunes as Waimea came back into the game. Shirley were in the lead 6-5 until the last two seconds when a hopeful cross from Waimea managed to squirm into the goal to end the game 6-6. In the final group game of the day, Bayfield were on the receiving end of a fast paced and relentless Shirley attacking system which resulted in a 17-2 victory which put Shirley through to a semi-final placing.

The knock-out stages started with a semi-final against Waimea College. In a game with great intensity and ferocity, Shirley scored goals from Josh Watson, Shaun Regaldo, Nick Smith and Sam Stevenson. With the game deadlocked at 5-5 at full-time, extra-time was upon the boys. The heroics of Ben Robson who kept goal again were absolutely outstanding and last gasp equaliser this time for Shirley from Shaun Regaldo took the game to penalties. Shirley showed great nerve with Mark Zimmerman, Luca MacLeod-Watts, Sam Stevenson and Isaac Russell dispatching penalties along with a superb save from Robson put Shirley through to the final where they would meet St. Thomas once again.

The Final proved, for a further time, that the Shirley team has courage and togetherness, with Robson and Watson stepping up again to go in goal as well as a number of boys carrying injuries determined to play. Unfortunately, St. Thomas proved to be ultimately too strong, despite some outstanding goals and passages of play, and ran out 11-6 winners. Shirley finished runners up and now have a good month to look forward to with National preparation for the NZSS tournament at the beginning of April in Wellington. A massive "well done" to the boys – Shaun Regaldo (Capt), Nick Smith, Sam Mason, Sam Stevenson, Ben Robson, Cameron Williams, Josh Watson, Mark Zimmerman, Isaac Russell & Luca Macleod-Watts. An even bigger thank you to all the Shirley parents with their devoted (and loud!) support across the entire weekend.

Shirley Boys' High School - Kings High School Annual Inter-school Exchange 2016

On March 7 and 8 the 1st XI and Junior cricket teams travelled to Dunedin to play Kings High School in their annual inter-school exchange. The games were played at Kings High School and the adjacent Tonga Park. Despite this being a warm summer, Dunedin did its part to remind the boys what it is like to play in chilly conditions. Some play was lost at the end of the first day due to rain but the second day was dry although a brisk southerly was blowing.

1st XI Game

In the 1st XI game Shirley won the toss and asked Kings High School to bat. Kings slowly ground their way to 191 all out off 68 overs. Shirley, who then batted in more difficult conditions, replied with 124/9. Unfortunately, we lost young top order batsman Brad Entwistle with a broken forearm after he was struck by a short pitched delivery. Kings then scored 121/8 before declaring leaving Shirley 189 to win in about 40 overs. Despite ‘having a go’ the target proved too tough and Shirley eventually had to defend resolutely to avoid defeat. Another young player Tom McDonald who have been sick in bed for most of the day with tonsillitis, had to go out and bat for three overs at the end of the day to help the team stave off defeat.

Shirley Boys 124/9 [Carl Hooper 30] and 133/8 [Taine Jacobs-Lawson 45, Ben Loader 22] drew with Kings High School 191 [Taine Jacobs Lawson 3-26, Carl Hooper 2-26, Cameron Clement 2- 23, Ben Loader 2-41] and 128/6 declared [Taine Jacobs Lawson 2-14, Cameron Clement 2- 7, Ben Loader 2-41]

Junior Game

The Shirley Junior team fought hard in this game but were eventually beaten in the last over of the day. A dominant batting performance by Kings High School saw them lead by 138 after the first innings. Despite the daunting task ahead of them, Shirley Boys put on a gritty team batting performance to almost deny Kings outright victory. A highlight of the Shirley batting was a 67 last wicket partnership between Jordan Prebble [47] and Rhys Webb [16*]

Shirley Boys 113 [Ryan Entwistle 39, Alex Thompson 25] and 197 [Jordan Prebble 47, Liam Armstrong 21, Mitchell Power 21, Quinn Bungard 20, Connor Watherston Spencer 20 lost to Kings High 257/6 [Ryan Entwistle 2- 65] and 62/3 by 7 wickets.

Tennis

Levi McNabb, Troy Hulston, Cameron Bayliss and Shea McIntyre made up the team that competed against Kings High School. We won five out of six matches. Cameron and Shea had great battles against their opponents with their matches going to three sets. Levi and Troy proved too strong winning their matches in straight sets. Challenging weather conditions with strong winds made some rallies tough but the team remained determined and came away with the win.

A successful trip and a great team who represented Shirley BHS well.
