Dragon's Den
Talofa, my name’s Dom, and on the 20th of May, Spacpac held the event Dragons Den, where schools were required to create a team of four and pitch a business idea to business entrepreneurs around Christchurch. With my team, Maia Te Tohu A Tu Gerrard, Dereon Maka, and Zavier Stack, we came up with the idea of fixing the problem around Pacific and Māori people's under representation in the STEM industries (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
After contacting other entrepreneurs, teachers in our school and using each of our individual strengths to put together a solid presentation to present to the judges, we were ready for Dragons Den; after long, strenuous amounts of work and arguments we had as a team, we created a product where young Pacific and Māori could learn Pacific and Māori stories and history through an app, website, and physical product.
In the end, we were able to win the judges' favour and secure ourselves first place, with $1000 towards our business and a pretty cool trophy to go with it. Our next steps for our business are to pitch to more companies and garner more investments. With the money, we plan to create a fully functioning prototype and test it on our audience, being young Pacific and Māori students. In a years time, we hope to begin monetising the business through social media, workshops, and selling our product.
