Southland Annual Interschool Exchange 2017

The 1st XI and Junior cricket teams travelled to Invercargill to play Southland Boys in their annual interschool exchange. Unfortunately the weather did not play its part, with rain washing out half of the first day and some of the second day. However, the boys were keen to play and battled through cold, showery weather on occasions to ensure the games were mostly completed.

1st XI Game [played at Southland Boys High]

On a rain affected first day Shirley batted first and struggled being bowled out for only 113. A couple of batsman made starts but no-one scored more than thirty. Southland responded by batting well into the rain shortened second day scoring 265 all out. This left Shirley 152 behind on the first innings and with no outright win possible, they had no option but to defend resolutely to save the game. They finished on 149 for 5 at the end of the days play [which was 8.00pm!]

Shirley Boys 113/10 [Brad Entwistle 22, Mitchell Barry 22, Ryan McLean 22] and 149/5 [Brad Entwistle 28, Mitchell Barry 36, Ryan James 50] drew with Southland Boys 265/10 [Marek Bungard 2-46, Kurvesh Bhaven 2-25, Matt Kendall 2-39, Mitchell Barry 3-28]

Junior Game

The first day of the Junior game was played at the beautiful Queens Park Oval. Shirley batted first and disappointed with the bat scoring only 71. Southland were 51/1 when the rain came which resulted in play being washed out for the day.

On the second day due to wet conditions at Queens Park the game was shifted to Southland Boys High on artificial pitch. It was decided to abandon the original game and play a 40-over game. Southland batted first and scored 186/10. Ahmad ul Sultani [4 wickets] and Connor McLaughlin [3 wickets] starred with the ball, In reply Shirley scored 185/10 losing their final wicket in the last over needing 2 runs to win. Sam Mclean was the best of the batsman scoring 41.

Shirley Boys 185/10 [Jayan Goldsworthy 29, Sam McLean 41, Ryan Entwistle 26, Caleb Blake 26] lost to Southland Boys 186/10 [Ahmad ul Sultani 4-44, Connor McLaughlin 3-18] by 1 run

Rugby

Shirley Boys’ High School competes in the Metro competitions run by the Canterbury Rugby Union on Saturdays. In recent years we have fielded teams from Under 14 to Under 18 including the 1st XV which competes in the Crusader franchise-wide competition the UC Championship.

With up to 300 boys playing Rugby, we always need some input from parents and our local community for coaching and managing. While we always endeavour to have at least one staff member involved with each team, it is not always possible, so if you have a desire to be involved, then please contact me.

Likewise, if you have any ideas or opportunities for fundraising and sponsorship that our Rugby Committee can act upon.

Rugby registration here is now an on-line process. Earlier this month, all 2016 players were sent an email requesting that they register for the 2017 season. I urge everyone to do this as soon as possible as this gives us plenty of time to arrange potential coaches.

All Year 9 and other new players have been invited to register on-line by going to the following link to complete the registration process.

http://sporty.co.nz/viewform/25863

All players must register with NZ Rugby Union so everyone must go through the same process.

Rugby Notices: We will attempt to make contact with Rugby boys through the following means:

  • Daily Notices
  • Notice Board outside Sick Bay
  • SBHS Rugby Club Facebook site

It is important that boys are proactive and checking these areas daily to find out about pre-season trainings, meetings, trials and once the season starts for weekly draw details.

There will possibly be some pre-season training during Term 1, (managed around summer sport activities) prior to grade trials from 3 April 2017. The 1st XV and 2nd XV prospects have already started squad training.

Remember that the Rugby Club is an extension of the schoo,l and as such the school rules apply to both practices and games. This is especially important regarding conduct and dress before, during and after weekend games. Boys should wear rugby gear for training as opposed to tee-shirts and singlets and all players should be wearing the SBHS uniform on game day. The wrong shorts and socks are unacceptable as are boots with the “blade” soles and multi-short sprig moulded soles. These boots may be great for touch in summer, but rugby is a winter sport requiring “sprig” soles for grip, traction and safety.

SBHS Rugby Jerseys, shorts and socks are available now for purchase from the Student Office (Not the Uniform Shop).

Mouthguards will be issued to each team in Term 2 so boys should be providing own for training and trials prior to that.

At the moment, I have several second-hand polyester jerseys in stock for sale. If anyone has grown out of their jersey, or no longer requires it, we can sell on your behalf. This allows you to recoup some funds and provides someone else the opportunity to purchase a quality item at a reduced price. Please contact me to arrange.

The Rugby Registration fee of $50 should be paid to the Student Office no later than Friday 19 May and preferably before the end of Term 1.

Korfball

On Friday the 17th of February, a mixed team of Shirley Boys and Avonside Girls, played a game of korfball at the YMCA in Bishopdale.

Korfball was developed more than 100 years ago by a Dutch guy, who wanted a sport that was easy to play for both boys and girls in schools.

Here in Christchurch, every Friday, for 8 weeks, there's a high school korfball competition, organized by Youri Borrink. He is from the Netherlands and introducing the one and only truly mixed team sport to schools in Christchurch.

He does this without getting paid, just because he loves the sport and because it's a perfect sport to teach kids how to play together, work together and be active.

If you are a teacher, or someone who is interested in sport (maybe doing sport development at school), you should check out korfball (www.korfballcanterbury.co.nz), or have a chat to Youri (mobile: 020 412 220 99; email: youriborrink@hotmail.com).

Plus there'll be opportunities to play yourself, for example in the winter competition, which starts in May and is on a Sunday night.

This first game of the Shirley Boys/Avonside girls team went really well. The team played well together, passed the ball around (because you are not aloud to dribble) and scored a total of 6 goals. The opposition scored 16 goals, but hey, they were more experienced and it didn't matter, everyone had fun.
