Te Wharau

Tom Davies —

Manaia Wilson-Moses Tiny Hut Competition winning hut was made by Naylor Love and delivered to the school on Monday 17 November. It came on a low loader and was with us for 48 hours.

It was then taken to New Brighton where it is on display outside the Library (near Salt on the Pier Café). It will be on display for four months and looked after by UC.

Whilst the Tiny Hut, named Te Wharau, (temporary shelter) was with us it was given a formal blessing by Matua Te Rau Winterburn and the kapa haka group. The kapa haka group and the school also welcomed it with a haka.

This beautifully designed building weighs over five tonnes and cost an estimated $25,000 to build. The community of New Brighton have a say where the hut is permanently located but we are actively seeking to have the hut here at the school and eventually having a permanent location in our new school.

I am extremely proud of Manaia’s entry and 9D’s entries into the competition. Maths teaching through projects and problems is a very creative and enjoyable for staff and students.
