Sportsmen of the Year 2018

The SBHS 2018 Sportsmen of the Year Dinner was held at the New Brighton Club on Wednesday 26th September.

Student Master of Ceremonies Valentinito Punivai, introduced guest speaker Tom Christie, Old Boy speaker Cody Everson and student speaker Tyreice Tuilau.

Tom Christie had captained the Shirley BHS First XV in 2015 before studying Engineering at Canterbury University the following year. He was the captain of the New Zealand Under-20 team to the Under-20 Rugby World Cup France in 2018 and won the World Cup the year before.

A member of the Shirley BHS First XV in 2011, Cody Everson had been severely injured during a match against Christ’s College and, as a paraplegic had spent time at the Burwood Hospital Spinal Unit. Here he took up wheelchair rugby and this subsequently led to his becoming a ‘Wheelchair Black’ playing in international matches.

Tyreice Tuilau spoke about his involvement in Basketball and Touch.
