Health Education Community Survey

The Ministry of Education expects all schools to regularly consult with their community on the school’s delivery of the Health Curriculum. The following is an overview of Health Education at Shirley Boys High School and the link to the community survey can be found at the bottom of the page.


HEALTH EDUCATION:

Health Education is a compulsory part of the school’s core teaching requirements. Year 9 and 10 Students receive one hour a week of Health Education throughout two terms and the programme covers a variety of issues that relate to young adolescents, in particular boys. As a part of the health programme Year 9 students study Hauora (well-being) and mental health for 10 weeks and they also receive 10 weeks of Sexuality Education. In year 10, students receive 10 weeks of Alcohol and Drug Education and 10 weeks of Sexuality Education. The topics are delivered at levels appropriate to their learning level 4 and 5 working towards level 6 of the New Zealand Curriculum.

COMMUNITY AGENCIES:

They cover the following topics:

· self-worth

· relationships

· identity, sensitivity and respect

· interpersonal skills

· societal attitudes and beliefs

The community organisation ‘Attitude’ offers six very engaging and relevant presentations throughout the year. The Year 9s are involved with the Hauora and Get Life presentations, which focuses on general health, bullying, cyber safety and relationships with friends and family. The Year 10s are involved in theSex with Attitude and Hardwired presentations, which offers knowledge and advice on the topics of sex/relationships and drugs and alcohol. The Year 11s are involved in an Attitude presentation, which focuses mental health and resilience, pressure and personal choices and mental health. This one off session discussing many issues relevant to this age of students. The Year 12 and 13s are involved in a presentation called The Pits. This has a focus on stress and Mental Health, focusing on signs, symptoms and ways to deal with stress.

WIDER SCHOOL (STAFF AND STUDENTS):

In 2003, a school Health Clinic was established. The local health nurse runs this student service. This is provided every Thursday lunchtime for the boys to talk about a whole variety of issues and to receive medical advice. This initiative will continue in 2017.
