Zonta Awards

John Fox —

On the evening of Thursday 26th October, the 27th Zonta Sports Awards were held to celebrate Outstanding Sports Achievers in the Canterbury Westland area.

SBHS was well represented with 10 boys making the Finals.

In Category 1, Most Valuable Contribution to a Team; Jackson Taylor was Highly Commended (for continuing to assist with the 1st XV throughout his injury recovery).

In Category 4, Outstanding Achievement in One Sport; Bailey Cumming (Powerlifting), Ryan James (Indoor Cricket) and Reece Falck (Tennis) were all Finalists.

This was an amazing category, with all 15 Boys and 18 Girls who were Finalists, all NZ representatives.

I was told that at the end of the first round of judging, 26 boys were deemed good enough to be finalists, but that had to be reduced back to a smaller number, so some NZ representatives missed out!

In Category 5, Outstanding Team; our Coxed Rowing Quad of McGregor Best, Max Ngataki, Elijah Coulston, Alex Cartwright and Joel Coleman were up against ten other teams, most who had triumphed at national level. The title was shared between the St Andrew’s Maadi Cup crew and the Christ’s Rankin Cup Hockey team.

In Category 6, Outstanding Achievement in More than One Sport; we provided three of the five finalists.

McGregor Best and Max Ngataki (for Rowing and Rugby), and Glen Beardsley (for Rugby, Touch and Surf Lifesaving). Glen was voted the Winner!

A wonderful night with over 400 people attending. It was great to see so many SBHS families there supporting their sons.
