The GTEAM Finish Top 10
The 2018 SBHS G-TEAM consisted of Cameron Maughan, Harry Cameron and Hamish Church.
The 2018 Canterbury Region Geography Quiz Competition – Maatangi Whenua, was held recently at newly opened Earnest Rutherford Science Building at the University of Canterbury.
The UC Science department was showcased to the boys, who took full advantage to look at the amazing new facilities. Each of the following departments having labs, teaching spaces per floor, Geography Level One, Geology Level Two, Physics Level Three, Biology Level Four and Chemistry Level Five.
These boys were under immense pressure to add a fourth Canterbury Title for SBHS after only scraping into the Top 10 over the past few years. The boys were feeling super-confident after their sterling preparation under the watchful eye of their classroom teacher – Mr Keats. However there was a heavy burden of expectation and pressure.
This year there were 21 teams – representing schools from as far afield as Mountain View High School in Timaru. The SBHS G-TEAM started strongly, scoring a top grade in the current events round and were in the top 10 at the first points update.
The usual masterful modelling efforts from SBHS teams were seen again this year in the Playdoh modelling round with the boys even trying their charm on the judges for a few extra points.
At the end of the Round Robin SBHS finished 9th. Unfortunately, 1st place went to St Andrew's – going back to back.
This result is a credit to the 2018 SBHS gteam, and their teacher Mr Keats, and they should be proud of their efforts. They represented the school well.
