Music (9Mus, 9Mua and 9Mub 1 Term each)

Ms J Herman —

The following courses are available for students to study in 2026

INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC

The Introduction to Music class will cover the basics of musical theory, including understanding the elements that make up music. We will also explore musical composition, beat, and song making using music software. Students will receive a practical introduction to

keyboard, guitar, and ukulele.

A key part of the course is understanding music in context. We will listen to a range of musical styles to understand where, when, who, why, and how they came about, as well as the stories they are used to tell. Students will also be able to share their favourite songs with the class and learn to appreciate the music others enjoy.

Students will not be asked to perform in front of the class, but we will do some playing together as a group. No experience is needed—just an open mind to all types of music and some imagination.

ADVANCED MUSIC

This course is designed as the next step for students who have completed the Introduction to Music class. Students with equivalent prior experience in music classes or instrumental lessons may be able to join with the teacher's approval.

This class will expand on the fundamentals covered in the introductory course, moving into more advanced topics in music theory and composition. The course will also include basic aural training to help develop your musical ear.

The practical focus will be on collaboration. Students will compose music in small groups and work together on larger compositions, taking our "classroom band" to the next level.

This is an excellent opportunity to use any instruments you have learned to play. As part of this creative work, students will have the chance to perform their compositions.

BAND

This course is designed solely for musicians who are proficient on an instrument and/or as vocalists. Students must have previously taken music lessons or have been involved in performance-based activities such as Kapa Haka, Polyfest, or performing choirs.

A high level of personal responsibility is required. Students will need to have a certain amount of self-managing skills and must be able to use all musical equipment carefully and responsibly.

The primary aim of this course is to form functional bands. These groups will work together throughout the term to rehearse a set, culminating in a public performance for either their classmates or a wider audience.
