The Learning Support Dept needs READER / WRITER VOLUNTEERS

GAC —

Each year, we have students who require special assessment conditions for NCEA. This involves a confident reader reading the student’s exam papers or NCEA internal assessment tasks and then, writing down the answers that the student verbally gives. We need to widen our existing group of dedicated volunteers who help regularly throughout the year for internal assessment tasks and at the end of the year for external examinations in November.

Although NZQA provide remuneration for November exams, during the year we give a petrol voucher to help cover costs of transport to school, but the assistance is otherwise voluntary.

Interested parents, guardians or other adults need to have a reasonable level of literacy and legible handwriting. You do need to be confident with spelling, punctuation, and paragraphing. Hand-writing needs to be fluent enough to complete the task in the time available. Training and guidance will be given, and a mandatory police check will be completed for all volunteers.

Being a reader / writer can be very rewarding as you are helping students with considerable learning difficulties to show their potential to achieve NZQA qualifications. Our students are very grateful for this help and realise its value to their futures.

If you would like to join our pool of helpers, please phone either one of our two Learning Support Coordinators Gail Collier on 3757035 extension 255 or Elizabeth Wilson on 3757057 extension 373. We’d love to talk to you about it!
