Year 9 Autumn Darts Classic

Mike Skinner —

The Year 9 Darts Club members have been practising on Mondays in F1. On Monday 7th and Wednesday 9th May, the first SBHS Darts Tournament of the year – the Year 9 Autumn Classic saw a large number of players play six round robin games, which whittled down to four semi-finals, a third fourth play-off and the final. All these matches saw top scoring, close games and memorable moments.

One requirement of entering the tournament was having a ‘pro-darts nickname’ – where Curly, Hawkey and Storm Trooper proved to be crowd favourites.

After the preliminary stage, Jayden Sincock emerged top with a five win, one loss record. Lachie Watson, Finlay Cronin and Lachie Osikai-Wilson rounded out the semi-finalists with four wins and two losses a-piece.

The first semi-final saw the “Battle of the Lachies”, with Lachie Watson coming out victorious after some glorious darts. Then the top-seed Jayden Sincock took on Finlay Cronin in a see-saw battle, where both had opportunities to dominate. However, it was no. 4 seed Finlay, who outlasted Jayden.

The third fourth playoff saw Jayden Sincock take third over Lachie Osikai-Wlison. Both players had high hopes of contesting the final and will be wiser for the experience of having to settle for the third fourth playoff.

The Autumn Classic Final was truly epic, with both players having a number of chances to seal victory and with the scores being even an extra time deciding leg was necessary. Finlay had two darts to win put could not finish it and Lachie Watson lived up to his pro darts nickname to put ‘the dagger’ in with a pressure last dart, and win it.

This tournament highlighted the growing depth in darts at Shirley Boys’ and it will not be far away from entering a premier team in local competition.

The tournament would like to thank official scorers Jacob Cowie and Matt Kendall.

The next SBHS Darts Club tourney is the “Open Championship” where the SBHS “Open” Trophy will be up for grabs. This tournament sees all students able to test their skills, club member or not. The question is, can number one seed and defending champion, Matt Kendall, retain his title and school-wide bragging rights?

The SBHS Open Championship is set for weeks five and six this term.
