Marlborough Exchange Report

Rugby 1st XV: Loss (23-36) vs (Marlborough Boys college) @ (Marlborough boy’s college)

Match Summary: Boys had a rough game against MBC having many calls go the wrong way. The boys did not back off the pace, with many great tries and good set piece play. Only just falling short they are fizzing coming in to their next game against Rangiora high school

Other: credit to the boys getting their debuts. Liam Hansen, Chanel Feala, Kiarn Wilson.

Rugby U15: Win (32-17) vs (Marlborough Boys College) @ (Marlborough Boys College)

Match Summary: Game day, the team arrived and warmed up with a real sense of sharpness. We kicked off and about 10 minutes in scored the opening try, followed by another, and then a third. The team was humming but all of a sudden, it all came to a grinding halt. We were trapped in our 22 for about 15 minutes where they scored a converted try and a penalty goal and we went into the break, up 18 – 10. In the second half, the team returned with that same edge as the first quarter of the game and with the wind at our back, we played the ball in the right areas of the field and got the rewards. We scored another two-converted tries to Marlborough’s one and came out on top 32 – 17.

Football 1st Xl: Loss (7-3) vs (Marlborough Boys College) @ (Marlborough Boys College)

Match Summary: The match kicked off at the A & P grounds in Blenheim against a strong Marlborough Boys College. Marlborough broke us down early scoring in the first 10 minutes, putting us on the back foot. Shirley found their rhythm and dominated for a period of 15 minutes, a whipped ball in from Connor Dunick assisted Greg Sewell for an equalising header. 5 minutes later Greg Sewell scored a powerfully driven free kick to put Shirley up by 1. The final 15 minutes of the half Marlborough scored three making the score line 4-2 going into the break. In the second spell, Shirley came out firing in an attempt to match Marlborough physically. Miscommunication in the Marlborough Boys backline gifted Eli Austen the opportunity to whip one into the back of the net from quite a distance. Shirley battled hard but came out second best, Marlborough proving to strong on the counter attack for our backline scoring 3 in the second half to make the final score 7-3.

Hockey: Loss (4-2) vs (Marlborough Boys College) @ (Marlborough Boys College)

Match Summary: The game started slowly for us as after a crucial mistake in the midfield, our opposition quickly found them self-up 1-0. After regathering our composure, we found ourselves with an attacking corner. Brad Knight found Captain Keeley found the bottom corner, as scores were level 1-1. We soon found our-self down another goal as well as player as Jonty Teague hit the deck, fracturing his wrist, 2-1 MBC. Shirley dug deep in the second half and an attacking Keeley found the circle edge and with a well-timed shot, equalized the scores. Unfortunately we were unable to stay calm and a few more crucial turnovers found us tailing 4-2 and out of time.

Water polo: Loss (15-10) vs (Marlborough Boys College) @ (Marlborough Boys College)

Match Summary: A stellar performance by the Shirley Water polo in Marlborough in front of a sold out Stadium 2000 crowd. The boys started well and competed for large periods of the game but could not leave with the chocolates, going down 15-10 to Marlborough Boys College up on foreign territory. Connor Watherston-Spencer tried to put the team on his shoulders, the team captain put up 21 shots, nailing 9 of them. Fletcher Platt rounded out the scoring with a goal of his own. Platt had a solid performance in the fixture at both ends of the pool. Flynn McDonald also garners special mention, winning all four swim offs before fouling out mid-way through the fourth quarter. Matthew Newbitt also had a solid performance before controversially fouling out at the end of the first quarter. A good game to round out a successful first season for the Shirley Water polo.

Jnr Basketball: Win (53-51) vs (Marlborough Boys College) @ (Marlborough Boys College)

Match Summary: Shirley Boys High School started strongly, scoring the first 6 points. MBHS came back strong to lead after the first break 12-16. The MBHS centre caused many rebounds to go to the locals as SBHS battled in the second to catch up 24-24. A pack defensive strategy meant that we were able to gain momentum in the third and disrupt driving attempts by talented players. Shirley hung on in a last second shooting situation to win 53-51.

Snr Basketball: Won (95 - 60) vs (Marlborough Boys College) @ (Marlborough Boys College)

Kings Exchange Report

Rugby 1st XV: Loss (37-15) vs (Kings College) @ (Kings College)

Match Summary: Boys had a rough game down at Kings, not being able to get the win. However, some excellent effort from individuals such as Liam Hanson, who ran 80 metres to score a great intercepted try, which lifted the boys to perform with some good spark.

Other: Debuts: Phife Toto, Carlos Jones

Rugby U14: Loss (50-5) vs (Kings College) @ (Kings College)

Match Summary: The U14 rugby team received a tough lesson around defence and attitude in their game against Kings High School. The boys started well, but when the big Kings forward pack got rolling, the boys slipped off far too many tackles and as a result had a very tough day at the office. Deijdre Siaki scored the only try for Shirley, with a great 40-metre run, breaking through several tackles. The boys certainly struggled to contain the big Kings side going down 50-5.

Football Jnr 1st Xl: Loss (4-2) vs (Kings College) @ (Kings College)

Match Summary: Shirley Boys High School Junior 1st XI faced their Kings HS counterparts in the annual fixture as part of the exchange. The game started as expected with Kings keeping possession and looking dangerous on the attack. The extra training sessions the Kings players have as part of their academy were showing with some slick combinations. Shirley went one nil down when the tall timber of the Kings team rose from a corner to nod home. That seemed to spark Shirley into action and saw a period of dominance from our boys who quickly went two-one up with goals from Marshall Patrick and Cameron Williams. Both goals the result of very good movement and passing out wide. Unfortunately Kings found an equaliser through an own goal and the half ended at 2-2. The second half saw many changes to the Shirley line up with players being tested in unfamiliar positions to see how they would go. Despite the best efforts of all some cohesion was lost and Kings scored 2 unanswered goals in the second half to take the game 4-2. The attitude of the Shirley team was excellent with all players pushing hard until the end to try and find a way back into the game. Despite all players deserving credit special mention must be made of Sam Mclean, who made some excellent saves in the second half to keep the boys in the game as new combinations were sorted out on the field. All the boys acquitted themselves very well both on and off the field.

Junior Basketball: Won (93-48) vs (Kings College) @ (Kings College)

Match Summary: Junior Basketball team won 93-48. The first quarter was a closely fought game, with King’s hitting a bunch of 3’s to leave SBHS down 21-23. However, throughout the second quarter King’s struggled to keep the pressure on due to a key player leaving to play Jnr rugby. SBHS gathered a lead and applied a tight man-to-man defence, which lead to fast break opportunities. The second half was all SBHS. A number of players were able to develop their skills while maintaining a big lead. In the final quarter, King’s started to take possessions away by stealing the ball. SBHS handled themselves well and took care of any turnovers in the last few minutes to score a solid 93-48. Greg Roger 20, Boppy Halaifonua 17, Nikora Wikiriwhi 16, Matui Carroll 12, Kalis Karamaena-Tangaroa 9, Anaru Walker 6, Tautahi Briggs 5, Ryan Wood 5, Tyler Beecroft 3

Senior Basketball: Win (89-50) vs (Kings Boys College) @ (Kings College)

Match Summary: Senior A team had a comfortable win over the Kings Senior A team despite missing 4 of our usual 5 starting players. Tyreice Tuliau was the standout player on the day scoring 17 points and playing some smothering defence on the Kings guards. We had strong performances at both ends of the court from Jayden Watkinson, Loyal Patelesio, Wiremu Waaka, and Mona Faitaua-Nanai. All 10 boys who played made the scoresheet and contributed to a well-deserved win.

Tyreice Tuliau 17, Jayden Watkinson 11, Loyal Patelesio 10, Josh Thomson 10, Wiremu Waaka 10, Amit Aryal 9, Mona Faitaua-Nanai 8, Noah Westwood, 6, Mike Tusani 5, Greg Rodger 2
