Junior Basketball Tournament Results 2015
Year 9 and 10 Basketball players headed to Nelson recently to compete in the Junior Secondary Schools South Island Basketball Championship. The team performed well eventually finishing third out of 19 teams, with their only loss being to eventual winners Burnside High School. The boys had an excellent team spirit and played some outstanding basketball. It was a most enjoyable trip. Mr Gilmore [coach] and Mr Grocott [manager] accompanied the team.
Highlights included finishing first in our pool, a strong performance against the eventual winners Burnside, a convincing win over Middleton Grange who are usually difficult to beat, and the hard-fought win over Otago Boys' High School in the third place Playoff.
Thank you to those parents and others who supported us. Also thanks to Hamsa Shire [Year 11] who went to the Tournament as the School's nominated referee.

NZ Secondary Schools Swimming Championships
Shirley Boys’ High School was represented by Regan Mundy (Year 11) and Joe Hall (Year 11) at this competition in Hamilton, held 11-13 September. Competition was tough but they managed to achieve the following top 10 places - Regan in 50m Freestyle (5th) and 100m Freestyle (8th); Joe in 50m Butterfly (10th). Well done boys!
Josh Mosa’ati - Orchestra Festival
Recently Josh Mosa’ati performed with the Canterbury Schools Regional Orchestra as the lead trombone selected from all schools in Christchurch. He performed in a concert at Villa Maria and also at the Aurora Centre as part of the Christchurch Secondary Schools Orchestra Festival. Well done, Josh. We look forward to hearing more of your trombone playing in the coming years.
South Island Climbing Competition
In early September, Shirley Boys’ High School had three teams competing in the South Island Secondary School Competition held at the YMCA-Roxx Climbing Gym. At the end of Day 1, Team 2 was in second place, Team 1 was in third place, Team 3 in fifth place overall. Unfortunately Team 1 comprising Joe Furniss, Chris Van Vuuren, Marcus Taylor and Matt Thomson could only compete on Day 1 of the event due to the Outdoor Education Tramp taking place on the second day.
After two full days of climbing Team 2: Geordie Naylor, Alex Dowell, Cole Yeoman and Josh Sutton (from CCC) gained second place overall in the Male Team Event and Team 3: James Hunt, Aiden Power, Ben Comfort and Callum Thompson placed forth. The boys all pushed themselves and climbed hard.
All the climbers had also been part of the Wednesday after-school High SchoolLleague during which they placed first after a competition in Term 2.
