SBHS 2023 NATIONAL FUTSAL CHAMPIONS!

DPS —

Recently we had sent both a Junior team and a Senior team up to Wellington to compete in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Futsal Championship. Both these teams have been training before school and after school multiple times per week, since the start of term 4 last year, in anticipation for this event.

Our Juniors played a great tournament with many of their players proving they have what it takes to be included into our Senior A team later this year. Finishing 5th in New Zealand and unlucky not to make the Semi finals, these boys can be very proud.

Our Senior team who is coached by a Shirley old boy in Mark Zimmerman team, moved out of their pool with three wins from three before taking on Wellington College and winning in their round of 16. Both the quarter and semi finals went down to penalties with Shirley winning both moving us into the final. The final was against St Patricks College Silverstream, Ocean Sekihara opened the scoring for SBHS, the boys' then had to dig deep to hold onto the 1-0 lead throughout the match. Seb Wong had a fantastic game in goal, keeping the opposition out and also receiving golden glove for the tournament.

The hard work of the past few years had paid of with Shirley winning a national title.
