The Spartans Sport Junior Individual Sportsman of the Year finalists:

Hamish Church

The only Year 9 player in the Shirley BHS First XI Hockey team, Hamish played every game in 2016 as a mid-fielder. He was also a member of the competition-winning Carlton-Redcliffs Division 3 team as well as a Canterbury Under-15 Hockey Representative playing in the National Under-15 tournament at Napier.He also coached an Avon mini-sticks team and was a Hockey umpire.

Baxter Colyer

At the 2015 and 2016 New Zealand Seido Karate Shibu Youth Tournament, Baxter was a multiple winner. He also won two fencing cups over the past two years – including the 2016 Junior Men’s Foil.

Ethan De Rose

Ice Speed Skater Ethan won all his races at the Australian National Championships, at the Canterbury Cup and the Canterbury Short Track Championships, and at the South Island Championships and the Dunedin Championships where he set a New Zealand record and two World Championship qualifying times.

Reece Falck

A member of the Burwood Park Tennis Club, Reece has won a number of men’s and mixed titles. In 2016 he was a New Zealand Under-14 Junior Championships Quarter-finalist and a Doubles finalist. He was also a member of the Canterbury team which placed 2nd at the National Junior Under-14 Teams Event.

He was selected by Tennis NZ as one of three 14-year-old boys for the 2015 – 16 Targeted Development Athlete programme. He was chosen by Tennis NZ to compete and train on clay courts in Holland and Germany. He was also selected to play in the National Masters event in Wellington as one of the Top 8 Under-14 players in New Zealand.

Finlay Forbes

An Ice Hockey and In-Line Hockey player, Finlay was goalie for the Shirley BHS team and was selected in the Canterbury and South Island Under-17 Ice Hockey teams. He was also goalie for the Canterbury Under-20 team and a member of the 2016 New Zealand Junior Open Premier ‘Skate of Origin’ Ice Hockey team.

Finlay helped to organise and develop a Shirley BHS In-Line Hockey team to going to Nationals and was selected for the Central Region Men’s In-Line Hockey team to compete at the inter-regional tournament. He was also selected for the New Zealand In-Line Hockey team competing at the Under-14 Junior Olympics in Hawaii where he won the Goalie Skills Challenge.

Jacob Pierce

A motorcycle racer, Jacob placed 3rd in the King of Ruapuna, 2nd in the King of Canterbury, and 3rd in the light-weight production class King of Canterbury. In the Junior Development Nationals series, he had four race wins and eight podium finishes, and he also won the New Zealand GP. He was placed 2nd overall in the New Zealand Junior Development series. He also created a lap record at Teretaunga in Invercargill of 1:17.

Shaun Regaldo

Shaun was a member of the Shirley BHS Junior Futsal team which placed 5th in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships and was the runner-up in the Mainland Championships, as well as being the Canterbury Champions.

Shaun is also a member of the Shirley BHS First XI and is part of the Canterbury Federation Talent Centre. At the Winter Football Tournament, he was voted Tournament MVP. His football talents have been recognised nationally by the National Talent Centre which develops players for the New Zealand Under-17 World Cup team.

Ethan Saywell:

A talented junior rower, Ethan also competed throughout the season in THE Under-15, Under-16, and Under-18 Novice categories.

In the Shirley BHS Under-15 Double Sculls he was 3rd in the South Island Club Championships, 3rd in the Canterbury Secondary Schools Championships, and 2nd at the South Island Secondary Schools Championships.

He was a member of the Shirley BHS Under-18 Novice Eight which placed 1st at the Otago Club Championships, and the SI Club Championships, the Canterbury Secondary Schools Championships, as well as the South Island Secondary Schools Championships. The Eight placed 3rd at the National Secondary Schools Championships, The Maadi Cup Regatta.

In the Shirley BHS Under-18 Novice Four, he placed 2nd at the South Island Championships, and 5th at Maadi as well as in the Shirley BHS Under-16 Eight which placed 3rd at the South Island Championships.

Scott Shackleton

Scott was a member of the Shirley BHS Under-14A Rugby team and was selected for Canterbury Under-14 Metro.

Josh Watson

The inaugural recipient of the Spartans Sport Junior Scholarship in 2015, in 2016 Josh was a member of the Shirley BHS Junior Futsal team. He also played Junior Football and was selected for the Canterbury Under-14 Football team.

Mark Zimmerman

A member of the Shirley BHS Junior Futsal and Junior Football teams, Mark was selected for the Canterbury Under-14 football team.

The Petrie Cup

Donated by the Petrie family to honour the best all-round sportsman in more than one sport. The Petrie Cup was first presented in 2016 by former Shirley BHS Head Boy, Richard Petrie who was awarded Blues in Cricket, Hockey and Volleyball in 1984.

Nominees:

Josh Archer: Rugby, Surf-Lifesaving, Kayaking

First XV co-captain having played 46 games for this team and ‘Most Valuable Forward’ in 2016, Josh was also a member of the Junior Knights Academy, playing against the Hurricanes and was selected for the Canterbury Metro Under-18 Tournament team.

Competing for the Arawa Canoe Club at the Under-18 New Zealand Championships, he won a national title in the K4 200m event and placed 2nd in the K4 1000m.

At the Under-19 Canterbury Surf-Lifesaving Championships he placed 2nd in the Ski Relay and the Double Ski, and 3rd in the Ski and the Beach Flags.

Cruz Topai-Aveai: Rugby, Sevens, Rugby League

Cruz played over 40 games for the First XV and was voted the Shirley BHS ‘Player of the Year’ and also received the Philip McDonald Memorial Medal for the best player in the UC Championship. A member of the Junior Knights Academy, he played against the Hurricanes.

In Sevens, he was an influential member of the Shirley BHS team. In late 2015, he trialled for the South Sydney Rabbitohs before joining an Auckland training camp being awarded MVP. He played for the Celebration Lions and was selected for the South Island Under-17 side. He was contracted to the Rabbitohs to play in the Under-20 Grade in 2017.

Glen Beardsley: Rugby and Super Touch

A mobile First XV forward and member of the Junior Knights, Glen was selected for the Canterbury Under-18 Metro Development Squad.

As a member of the Shirley BHS Super Touch Team as well as the Canterbury Under-17 Touch Team, he coached and refereed a Year 9 Touch Team.

McGregor Best: Rowing and Rugby

McGregor was a member of the Shirley BHS Under-18 Rowing Eight as well as the Avon Rowing Club, and an impressive First XV loose forward.

Nethaniel Bolton: Super Touch and Rugby

Nethaniel played over 100 games of Touch for Shirley BHS and captained both the 2016 School Super Touch Team and the Canterbury Under-17 Touch Team

A member of the First XV, he was also selected for the Canterbury Metro Under-18 Development Squad.

Boris van Bruchem: Rugby and Korfball

Boris played 27 games over two seasons for the First XV and was recognised as one of the best lineout forwards in the UC Championship. He was a member of the Junior Knights Academy playing the Hurricanes and was selected for the Canterbury Metro Under-18 Tournament Team.

A Canterbury Korfball representative, he was selected for the New Zealand Under-19 Korfball Team to the World Championships in the Netherlands in 2015.

The winner of the Petrie Cup for the best All-round Sportsman for 2016.

Nominees

Logan Bell: First XV Rugby

Co-captain in 2016, and a hard-running second five eight, Logan played all 17 games for the First XV, taking his tally to over fifty. He was selected as the ‘Most Valuable Back’ and received the Cody Curran Memorial Trophy for the ‘Most Inspirational Player’. A Junior Knights team member he was selected for the Canterbury Metro Under-18 Tournament Team.

Josef Berry: Volleyball

Vice-captain of the Shirley BHS Volleyball ‘A’ Team and awarded Blues for Volleyball and Beach Volleyball, Josef was selected for the Tournament Team at the Canterbury Championships and was selected for the New Zealand Under-19 Development Team.

Ryan Fraser: Ice Hockey

Captain of the Shirley BHS Ice Hockey Team, at the South Island Tournament in Dunedin, Ryan was voted the ‘Top Defenseman of the Tournament’. He played for the Canterbury Minors Under-20 Ice Hockey Team and trained with the Canterbury Red Devils Men’s League Team. He represented New Zealand in the gold medal-winning Under-18 National Team at the International Ice Hockey Federation tournament in Capetown, South Africa.

Luke Hulston: Volleyball

Captain of the Shirley BHS Volleyball ‘A’ Team and awarded Blues in Volleyball and Beach Volleyball Luke was selected for the Tournament Team at the Canterbury Championships and named as captain of the New Zealand Under-19 Development Team. He was also selected as a reserve for the New Zealand Under-19 Team. He played for the Shirley Men’s Silverback ‘A’ Squad in the Southern Volleyball League.

Connor Robinson: Rowing

The No.1 cox in the Shirley BHS Rowing Squad, Connor was a member of the Avon Rowing Club and was selected for the South Island Under-18 Junior Rowing Squad.

Cruz Topai-Aveai: Rugby

Having made over forty appearances for the First XV and playing at No.8, Cruz was voted the Shirley BHS ‘Player of the Year’ and also received the Philip McDonald Memorial Medal for the Best Player in the UC championship. A member of the Junior Knights team, he was considered for the New Zealand Schools and Barbarian Schools Teams but subsequently signed a Rugby League contract with the Rabbitohs.
