Southland Annual Interschool Exchange 2018

This year the 1st XI and Junior cricket teams hosted Southland Boys in their annual interschool exchange at Burwood Park With The East Shirley Cricket Club kindly allowing us to use their grounds. Two magnificently fine days saw a good battle between the two schools but despite the valiant efforts of the Shirley players Southland Boys went on to win both games. Shirley will be looking for revenge next year in Invercargill.

1st XI Game

Shirley Boys lost the toss and were asked to bat first in good batting conditions. Despite being well-placed at 82/3, the middle and late order failed to fire and Shirley Boys were bowled out for 153. Shaun Berryman was the best of the batsman with 30. In reply, Southland scored 137 all out with Brad Entwistle and Ryan McLean both taking 4 wickets. Shirley did not bat well in their 2nd innings being bowled for 109 with several batsman making starts but carrying on. This left Southland 126 to win. A great start from the Shirley bowlers saw Southland reduced to 26 for 6 wickets thanks mostly to Brad Entwistle who picked up 4 early wickets. However, the Southland batsman recovered and they eventually passed the Shirley score in the last over of the game, 8 wickets down. The last half hour was exciting to watch and a good crowd of supporters and parents enjoyed watching a fascinating contest on a beautiful evening. Captain Brad Entwistle finished with 9 wickets for the match in an outstanding performance.

Shirley Boys 153/10 [Shaun Berryman 30, Brad Entwistle 21, Mitchell Barry 24] and 109/10 [Mitchell Barry 24, Quinn Bungard 20] lost to Southland Boys 137/10 [Brad Entwistle 4-24, Ryan McLean 4-54] and 126/8 [Brad Entwistle 5-24]

Junior Game

Shirley BHS batted first and struggled their way to 118 all out. The only notable performance with the bat came from captain Connor McLaughlin who scored 30 runs. Southland replied with 109 all out with the Shirley bowlers taking the last 4 wickets for only 5 runs. Connor McLaughlin, Ekamjot Singh and Maynard Walker took 2 wickets each. At this stage Shirley were still wel- placed in the game but another disappointing batting effort saw Shirley bowled out for 95. Only Tahlor Cahill with 29 and Ekamjot Singh 21 showed any form with the bat. This left Southland 105 to win which they did only 3 wickets down. Tahlor Cahill took 2 wickets with the ball.

Kings Exchange 2018

This year Kings HS hosted Shirley BHS in their annual cricket exchange in Dunedin. Despite a considerable amount of rain over the two days of the Exchange, it was decided to go ahead and play despite the wet and less than satisfactory playing conditions. Unfortunately, Shirley Boys lost both games.

1st XI Game

Shirley Boys lost the toss and were put into bat on a damp and seaming pitch. After a determined batting effort, the team declared at 160 for 8 wickets in a positive move to progress the game. Jayan Goldsworthy (45) and Brad Entwistle (29) were the best of the batsman. In reply, Kings scored 145 for 9 declared with Jaeden Hooper taking 3 wickets for Shirley. The Shirley team then had to bat for half an hour in poor light and difficult conditions to finish Day One and unfortunately lost 4 quick wickets. The next morning saw wickets continue to fall on a regular basis and Shirley were bowled out for a disappointing 22. Kings easily knocked the runs off without losing a wicket.

Shirley BHS 160/8 [Jayan Goldsworthy 45, Brad Entwistle 29] and 22/10 lost to Kings HS 145/9 [Jaeden Hooper 3-34, Ryan Entwistle 2-12, Phillip Smith 2-22] and 39/0 by 10 wickets.

Junior Game

Shirley BHS were totally outclassed in this game by an outstanding Kings HS team who are rated one of the Top 4 teams in New Zealand. Kings won the toss and batted first, scoring a well-compiled 192/6 declared. The best of the Shirley bowlers was Caleb Watson Webb with 3 wickets for 21 runs but all bowlers toiled hard despite a lack of success. In reply, Shirley struggled at both turns at bat being bowled out for 32 in their first innings and 51 in their second innings to lose by an innings and 109 runs.

Shirley BHS 32/10 and 51/10 lost to Kings HS 192/6 declared [Caleb Watson Webb 3- 21, Callum Worthy 1 – 22] by an innings and 109 runs.
