Sam Harris

On Thursday 1 December, Sam Harris made his way to Auckland’s Waitakere Trusts Stadium to compete in the 2016 New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Association completion. This three-day event gives New Zealand’s top athletes a chance to compete against each other and gauge their performance against other school age competitors.

The venue was the impressive site of the 1990 Commonwealth Games. It accommodated over 1000 athletes, male and female from throughout the country. This year’s competition was heavily laced with North Islander’s, particularly those from the home city. The competition was intimidating. For Sam it was his opportunity to perform against top Long Jumpers, Triple Jumpers and Pole Vaulters. Valerie Adams, Eliza McCartney were present as spectators. Shirley Boys High School ex-head boy, Jack Henry, a nationally-ranked Decathlete and Pole Vaulter, came to watch as well.

Friday’s competition saw him compete in the Pole Vault. This is a specialist event which has recently undergone a surge in popularity. Athletes who compete in this discipline need speed and strength and a special set of technical abilities which Sam has worked hard to acquire as a gymnast and while a member of New Brighton Olympic and Phoenix Athletics Clubs. He cleared the bar at 3.35m which placed him 4th.

Saturday’s events started with the Long Jump which had a great deal of impressive talent. Sam jumped 5.73m, earning a place in the middle of the field. By the afternoon an old injury had resurfaced. Sam none-the-less put this to the back of his mind and competed admirably in the Triple Jump with a best jump of 12.20m and a place of 8th nationally
