Christchurch Earthquake Anniversary

Jane Forster —

In Monday 22nd February, we held a special assembly for our students and staff to reflect on the ten year anniversary of the Christchurch Earthquake.

One of our teachers, Gail Collier, read a poem she wrote and our Head Boy, Cooper Gibb-Faumuina, performed a song called 'Birdie', an original New Zealand song followed by a moments silence at 12:51pm.

Following the assembly, students and staff were welcome to join the Headmaster and Head Prefects at a ceremony to plant a flowering cherry in remembrance of the events. This tree connects us to our old site, 77 North Parade, which was lined with flowering cherry trees.

The February 22nd Earthquake marked the beginning of the journey to our current site, Ōrua Paeroa.

Ten years on, we remember the lives lost, the families whose homes were damaged or destroyed, the ever changing landscape of our city and the resilience of our people.
